High Blood Sugar Levels

hello, i have been recently diagnosed with type 1 last week, the problem is is that i am still quite worried about my blood sugar levels, they seem too high. Roughly they have been from 12-18 each day but the nurse said that is what is expected, i really want to bring my blood sugar down to around 5/6/7/8. My readings are consistent though so i was thinking of having a large dose of novarapid just to bring it down? im not really sure, and are there any tips on how to keep the sugar levels at that low level? okay thanks :)
 
Hi. I would advise you to work with your care team rather than try to fix it yourself with a shot as you could risk having a hypo if the shot is too much.
 
Don't have the large dose of novorapid! depending on many things even 1 or 2 units can dramatically reduce your sugar levels relevant to your personal circumstances, be patient, ask for help from your medical team they will advise you best.
 
I was honestly all over the place for 2-3 weeks. It should come down on its own eventually once you've been on insulin a little while, it did in my case anyway! For now I would avoid any really carby meals and stick to what they've put you on. If you're always high at a certain time of day though they may advise you to take more with one of your meals. Since you're very recently diagnosed you'll most likely still be making some of your own insulin. Therefore if you take a big dose and your body decides to kick into action too, it could be really dangerous! Absolutely nobody is expecting you to be within range so soon, it will take a while, and trust me when I say you'll have periods in the future when you're ill or stressed or whatever, and you'll be MUCH higher than 12-18!

Just chat to your specialist, they'll advise you best of course :)
 
Further to that, since your body is used to running at a higher level, if you suddenly drop your levels to a normal range you'll be experiencing hypo symptoms even though you won't technically be hypoglycemic. They have to come down slowly over a period of time
 
ohh right okay! thank you very much, i just phoned up the nurse and she said that those reading wernt much of a problem as i have been newly diganosed so it should take some time :)
 
Hi. Nurses sometimes start you off on lower insulin levels to avoid hypos. Insulin should work and stabilise within a few days, although there are 'honeymoon' periods so I'm generalising. If the levels don't go down within a few weeks then discuss a dosing change with the DN. If you aren't carb-counting yet (adjusting the NovoRapid for mealtime carbs) then do ask the DN to guide you on that.
 
my sugars are regularly 18+ i hope to bring them down by montor then correction dose then monitor again
