Hi
My husband has been recently diagnosed with type 2 he is on 4 metformins daily.
This week his blood sugar has raised to between 23 and 26, today he is feeling very tired,
Cold sweats and a raging thurst, he also has a terrible smell on his breath.
Please can you you help? I don't know if I should call the doc or just let him sleep.
He has also admitted to taking an extra metformin because he felt ill.
Any advise will be appreciated.
Thank you for your time

Hi. With those readings and a smell which is probably ketones you need to see the doc over the weekend or go to A&E fairly urgently. Whilst low 20s is in itself not very bad, if ketones (the acetone smell) are present it can become dangerous very quickly and lead to ketoacidosis where the blood becomes acidic which is not where you want to be. A&E will probably put him at least temporarily on insulin whilst they or the GP decide the next move. How old is your husband and is he over or normal weight? In the meantime do get him to have plenty of water and keep the carbs well down until further meds are given. He must not of course exceed the Metformin 4 tablets per day (200mg). Is your husband already on a low-carb diet?
