High Blood Sugar

Hi there, I've been type 2 diabetic for some years now but for the last year have been taking insulin. I seem to have lost control of my blood sugar and whatever I eat my readings are quite high, sometimes through the roof! I took a reading this morning then took my insulin this morning and about 20 minutes later I took another reading; my reading went from 10 to 15 - why would insulin push my sugar up like this? I can't seem to keep on an even keel whatever I do; has anyone got any experience of this please.

I try to eat normally but have cut down on potatoes. I usually have a couple of slices of toast for breakfast or 2 boiled eggs. I did try muesli but it seemed to be too sweet. I eat vegetables and fruit and normally have meat for dinner but not chicken. I am not on a regime and don't know what DAFNE is or HbA1c??

I find it extraordinary that you have not apparently had any diabetes education.

HbA1c is the figure for the glucose in your blood cells, as distinct from a finger-prick test. It measures the average blood glucose for the last 2-3 months. It is the figure from the vein blood test they check annually & the Dr uses it to assess your medication.

DAFNE is used for insulin control - Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating. You are taught to adjust your injections to balance the carbs you eat. There are other courses for type 2 diabetics not on insulin.

You need to report your measurements to your Dr & ask him for diabetes education. Is there a diabetes support group in your area? West Midx Hospital run weekly sessions for newly diagmosed diabetics. Where in the country are you?

DAFNE is designed for insulin users who use a basal/bolus regime of insuline users... Where they have a background insulin (slow acting) like lantus or levimer and a Qucik acting insulin i.e humalog, Novarapid...

You say that you use insulin, what type/s of insulin do you use?

You mentioned that you inject before your're breakfast and took a BG 20 minutes later, which is really too early, normally you take a BG 2 hours after eating to see how the BG has reacted, you can take a BG 1 hour after eating this will give you a idea how high you levels raise before falling..

Other considerations is do you still take any type 2 oral medications, as T2 are resistent to how insulin is used in there bodies? This would have to be looked into as well.

WIth saying all that, how often and when do you test you BG's?

HbA1c's is a blood test that gives the adverage of you blood glucose over the previous 3 months, a non-diaetic would have a advarage of around the 5% mark, A diabetic should to be as near to this mark as possible but below 7.5%... But if you self Monitor on a daily bases ang achieveing good before and PP meals BG's then you will find that this will give good HbA1c's...
