High Blood Sugars in Pregnancy

I've just found out I'm pregnant. I am type 1 Diabetic & have poor control over it.
The doctors at the hospital have said that if my blood sugars were high around time of conception, it will have damaged my baby.
My last HbA1c was done last year and was 10. they have done another now to see how they have been since then.
Since I found out I was pregnant I have been keepin my blood sugars as controlled as I can.
Has anyone else had high blood sugars around time of conception? And have the baby had any complications?
The doctors were talkin 2 me like a was a bad person & I will have to abort my baby coz its already gon be damaged.

Hi ice202x

Many happy returns on becoming pregnant! I think the main thing is if you are controlling things now, then be positive that all will be well. You are obviously healthy enough to have conceived in the first place, which is a positive - it's not that easy to get pregnant! To help with your control, they should let you have a pump, which I have heard is very helpful for diabetics in both conceiving and whilst being pregnant (might be worth considering - unless you are already on a pump?).

It's absurd that they are suggesting you should consider an abortion due to the circumstances - the main thing is it's your decision and if you are looking after yourself now, that's the best you can do. There are other women who do not take of themselves while pregnant, we just do the best we can.

I hope everything works out ok for you and wish you all the best.

I'm also type 1, and whilst my control was fairly ok before pregnancy (im currently 15 weeks along) just before I found out I was pregnant I had some very high readings, which I do feel bad about now. I also post on a pregnancy forum where they have a type 1 thread and lots of ladies who conceived with high hba1cs went on to have healthy babies. If you aren't already, take the high dose folic acid 5mg which you can only get on prescription. Keep us updated and try and stay positive x

Im just so scared of what damage I've done. This baby wasn't planned & a big shock.
I already have a son & my HbA1c was 8 when they tested me at 10wks preg with him.
When I enquired about this at the hospital they told me that isnt ideal but an ok result. but with my control being so bad and lasyt years test being 10, I think this 1 is going to be around 10 or higher.
They said even though my control is at the right level now I know I'm pregnant, the damage may already be done at time of conception & the few weeks I didnt know I was pregnant.

Congratulations on your upcoming happy event.
Don't worry about complications due to your past blood sugars - but follow the advice you are given and look after yourself !
It's true that there is a slightly higher incidence of problems for babies with diabetic Mums ..... but it's still very uncommon and there is no hard and fast evidence to say that it is caused by high bs levels before & during pregnancy - there could be many other reasons why it happens - out of your control.
Don't beat yourself up about it - just look forward to the baby arriving. I'm sure everybody on the forum will keep a good thought for you - I will !

Thank you. I had my test results back it was 90 last yr & now this one was 60, so they were happy that its come down a bit. but as its still on the high side, I have to go for regular appointments now to alter my insulin doses if needed. they dropped it down 2 units this week due to low readings at night. hopefully next test they do they would've come down more from 60.
I'm just hopin the damage hasn't already been done. I do feel a lot better now, than I did last week as not as bad as I thought it would be. I just need to keep it under control now like I did when I was pregnant last time :)

You can only do your best from now on hun, try not to worry about the past, just keep the levels as normal as you can. I had a bad night last night where I was at 14mmol for 5 hours, it just wouldn't come down and I ended up staying up all night correcting then I had a massive drop 5hours later! I feel guilty for that but sometimes it's out of our control. X
