Take a good read through the forums on diet. It sounds like you need to make some changes.

Try The GI diet by Rick Gallop and the collins little gem Carb counting books to start. Others will reccomend books that have helped them too. Also try to take a little more exercise this may help too.

Do some testings to find what foods send your blood sugars up and them try and avoid them.

What works for one may not work for everyone. Its a trial and error till you get it right, then stick with it.

Hi Lyn and welcome to the forum.

Do you have a blood sugar monitor or was the reading from a test done at your doctors? Have you been as high as that for long or was this a sudden jump? That level is dangerously high and would indicate that you need to make some pretty drastic adjustments to your diet. If you can give us an idea of what a typical day's meals comprise then we will do our best to advise you.

Cameraman is quite right that you need to know what foods have the worst impact on your BS, but first let's concentrate on getting your BS down to a safe level.

HI

Agree with advice about looking at diet in a general sense but if this is a recent inexplicable change in sugar levels(ie you cant link it to illness or what you've been eating-usually high amounts of starchy carbs will put it up) then you need to get back to your GP to have your medication/diabetes looked at.

If you are showing ketones, drink lots of water and keep a close eye on it. If they continue to show high on your testing, ie ++ and especially +++ then get yourself to A and E (esp if you start to feel unwell). Better to be safe than sorry

Hi i'm new to forum and looking for advice my partner has type 1 and takes regular insulin and also does exercise, he is just getting over pnuemonia (5 weeks and counting) but his bloods are all over the place 19.2 this morning, I try to cook healthy balanced meals but whatever we try his sugars are still erratic - is this due to illness or the meals i cook? :? help please

Hi Su H welcome to the forum.Yes illness can certainly put up your blood sugar levels quite a bit.If the meals that you are cooking are the same before his illness then it is likely that the illness is to blame.Have you talked this over with his doctor?

Try doing this for a while

and have a read round here

You could go higher on the metformin and at those kind of levels I'd go back to my doctor and see about getting a sulph or maybe even insulin to bring the levels back down to a level where the diet might have more chance to control them

Thanks for everyones advice.Went to my GP on Thursday and put me on Pioglitazone 15mg once a day.
My readings are still high.My last test on blood machine showed up 21.9 still high and that was at 8 o'clock today.Cut down bread today as i think bread brings it up .Its now 12.36am and done a test again which showed up 16.9 so gone down a tag.
I am going to go through all the info that Trinkwasser adviced and others. This is a very good forum and im sure it will help me loads.
I also heard that Whey protein shakes can control insulin levels.Has anyone had any experience with Whey protein.

AFIK there is only one report that whey protein can help stabilise blood sugar levels and that was written not by a doctor or researcher, but by a journalist, who also happens to write for several health publications that (just by coincidence!!!) happen to carry a lot of advertising for protein supplement products. Draw your own conclusions!

What will bring your blood sugar levels right down is a combination of the meds you have been prescribed, plus a radical reduction in your carbohydrate intake. Carbs convert 100% to glucose, so the more carbs you eat then the higher your blood sugar will be. Reduce the carbs and you will see your blood sugar levels reduce to a healthy level.
