Being diabetic lol.
Hi. I’m type 2 on 3 different meds for my diabetes. I fund a CGM (libre) myself - so I see what my blood sugar goes up to right after a meal. It often hits 13/14 but then after an hour will start to go down & then by 2 hours it is often 5!
If I hadn’t checked my blood until 2 hrs after eating I wouldn’t know this. My a1c was 42 last time.
I take 1 tablet in the morning (as makes you pee more I was told) & the other 2 at night - maybe I should take them all at the same time?
I would like your thoughts on this pls.

Hi

The thing is that the peak blood glucose post eating is usually seen around 40-45 minutes after the meal. It's perfectly normal, happens to non-diabetic people as well. Your digestive system is converting the carb into glucose, and your insulin reponse is following on but it will take around two hours to clear the excess. This is why people are usually told to (fingerprick) test after two hours - if you test before then you have no idea whether BG is on the way up or the way down.

My best example of this (from CGM data) is of having a small latte after fasting. I started at around 5.0; within 35 minutes I was at 9.5 or thereabouts; by one hour I was back to 5.0 . That was from only the small amount of lactose in the milk.

The research below shows the impact of various meals on a range of non-diabetic people - this was done to get some idea of what normal looked like as far as non- diabetic CGM users were concerned. You'll see substantial rises (etc) after meals.

In other words, you're not seeing anything new or unusual and there would seem to be no justification for changing your medication routine, which I wouldn't advise doing without discussing with your prescriber in any case.

Hi. Thank you so much for taking the time to send me a thorough reply. Also thank you for the link - that I have read with interest. I feel less worried now - thank you again. X.
