High BS following eye operations

I was diagnosed 16 months ago; first hba1c was 88, then consistenly 51 after that, last test end of June this year. My cholestrol is also down. Obviously I was pleased with this. In August I had to have emergency surgery for a retinal detachment (not diabetes related) and five weeks later a second operation for the same problem. Each op resulted in four weeks off work and I know that my BS would have been higher during this time as I admit to a fair few 'tea and biscuits' as I was very down. I confess I didn't test at all during this period as I was only concerned with my eye. When I returned to work at the beginning of October, my diet returned to normal. Last week I had further laser surgery and I also have a slight cold at the moment.
My blood sugar is ridiculously high, rising, for example from 8.8 first thing to 14.4 two hours after breakfast (two slices of wholemeal toast, which never caused a problem previously). I have always had a slightly high reading first thing but previously it would only rise 1-3 point after meals, not 6 points! This is really worrying me after previously feeling I had it under control.
I am not on any medication apart from eye drops, and have been taking paracetomol for pain sometimes, and Night/Day Nurse for my cold but not alot. Can anyone help please? I am so worried! I think my meter is OK as I tested someone else with it (not definitive proof I know!)

It could just be because you're under the weather. If I get an infection, my B/S goes up quite a bit, so it could just be the cold and/or generally being a bit run down after several rounds of surgery/treatment/biscuits.

To be honest, I'd set more store by whatever your next Hba1c reading turns out to be. I use a monitor from time to time but any reading is just a snapshot at a particular point in time, rather than the broader picture that you get from Hba1c.

Hope this helps.

Thank you jay hay-char, that's very reassuring. You're right, I was due for another hba1c at end Sept but didn't go with all that was going on. I will make an appointment!
