I’ve been having issues with fats for quite sometime. If I eat fat I feel nauseous for the remainder of the day and beyond. It was initially saturated fats that gave me grief. Recently, however, I’ve started to feel iffy on monounsaturated fats. Olive oil is my go to fat.

This past year I’ve had three bouts of upper right and middle left abdominal pain. It radiates into my back. This last bout, the pain was intense 8/10 for around 5 hours. It came on suddenly just after midnight. I wanted to throw up. It subsided early morning to a low level gut ache of around 3/10 for around 12 hours after. My blood sugars rose Significantly during the episode. I got GERD which I haven’t had since going 100% gluten free due to coeliac. In general I am feeling nauseous every time I eat now.

As a result of my forced low fat diet my triglycerides are low - 0.54, but my total Cholesterol numbers are above normal at 6.50 - LDL 4.54 and HDL 1.71. Obviously, my liver is producing all this cholesterol, but why?

I have a Dr’s appointment next week.

My question is this. If my issues are gall bladder related, I have read that gall stones, in the majority of cases, are made up of cholesterol, does anyone else have issues with gall stones in general, and anyone on on high fat low carb diet have gall bladder issues?

Obviously, I’m not looking for a diagnosis as forum rules do not permit, but any general thoughts or experiences on this would be much appreciated. Thanks, Mel.

Can't answer for being diabetes related. My cholesterol wasn't even measured way back then but I had my gall bladder removed when I was 22. I couldn't bear the smell of fatty food, we were only married for a year, moved house for a second time, had a new baby and my poor husband had to come home after a day's work and cook. Then he was up half the night with me rolling the floor. The smell of Mince steak cooking was one of the worst offenders, even the smell had me rolling the floor.

Gall bladder pain is horrendous!!!

I sympathise hugely with the gall bladder pain I had it years ago resulting in removal. I can’t comment on cholesterol stones as mine were like gravel, bile pigment stones apparently. Hope you can get some relief soon.

Hi @Melgar

I had horrendous pain with gallbladder issues. This was before my diagnosis of diabetes so at the time I put myself on a low fat (high carb by default!) diet which helped the gallbladder symptoms. I don't know what my cholesterol levels were doing, but eating any fats before my gallbladder was removed caused so much pain. I hope you get the help you need from your GP. Dealing with this AND diabetes must be very difficult and you'll need some professional advice. Wishing you well.

Thanks @nirishdaisy I can relate to that smell. Even the thought of fat now turns my stomach.

@Rachox thanks. I read about bile pigment stones. There seems to be several different types of stones. I would attend casualty, but as I’m not an emergency right now I’m guessing a CT scan would be useless so I’m waiting for my Dr’s appointment.

@Honeyblossom thanks. My blood sugars are unstable, they have been for some time. I’ve learned to live with them. Yes, eating fats brings on nauseousness and low level pain that seems to be in my upper right abdomen and middle left abdomen. The Last attack I had I couldn’t even touch my stomach it was that painful. I couldn’t roll over onto my left side as the pain increased. I know nothing about gall bladder issues. I’m hoping my pancreas is not involved.

So I’m waiting for an ultrasound appointment. They will focus on my gall bladder, pancreas and spleen. The pain in my left side of my abdomen (pancreas side) has all but disappeared , but the nausea hasn’t. The Dr is putting me on statins. I said I would not go on them as my Triglycerides are very low. So my not so helpful liver is producing all the cholesterol because I eat very little fat as I can’t even think about fat without wanting to throw up. I can hear your words @Chris24Main . How you held out and I was in agreement with you. I succumbed, the Dr convinced me because if my gall bladder situation.

Hey, whatever works...
My wife had similar gall bladder issues, no connection to diabetes whatever, but know you have my sympathies..
fingers crossed that the scan shows something you can work with. No theorising from me.

I know, it was kinda funny because I was seeing your words in my head as she was talking about statins. :hilarious: My biggest worry is my pancreas. It might be damaged because I’ve had fat issues for some time, like years, and my blood sugars are unstable.
