Hi
Been for my first three monthly check since being diagnosed in October. I was diagnosed with a hba1C of 50 and cholesterol of 7.1 My recent hba1c result is 46 without any medication as I adjusted my diet and cut out desserts, cakes chocolate etc and checked the sugar content in foods when I shop. I manage my diabetes with diet only, no meds. My latest cholesterol reading is 7 and my GP has advised me to go on a statin 20mg a day and to go back in three months time for a further blood test. I would appreciate any tips on how to adjust my diet to try and bring my cholesterol level down. I dont eat fried foods and I stay clear of saturated fats in foods.

HI. You appear to be following a diet that is based on previous dietary guidance which has been shown to be wrong. Don't worry about fats but do worry about all carbs. In general we need a diet with low carbs and to have enough protein, fats, veg and non-tropical fruits to keep you feeling full. With such a diet, your total cholesterol may come down a bit but the total doesn't really matter - it's the LDL, HDL and Trig ratios that matter.

I agree with the above. You need a print out of your cholesterol results so you can examine the breakdown and ratios. These are far more important than the total. The total goes up if your HDL (good stuff) goes up and the others stay the same.

It isn't fats that raise cholesterol, it is carbs, so do watch those, and don't just look at the sugar content on food labels, look at the total carb content. Anything containing potato, rice, bread, pasta, cereal and flour will raise your blood sugar levels.
