Hello my cholesterol is 7 last July it was 4.2 . I was diagnosed with T2 in December so I'm unsure of which diet to follow, I have refused statins as I had side effects before and so I ate low fats and ate porridge for breakfast . Any advice is appreciated. I've been dithering over this since December. I see the dietician on 8th February, and I know what she will say!!!

I also follow a low carb/high fat diet, and my cholesterol and lipids have improved on each of the 5 tests I've had since starting this way of eating. I don't eat porridge, it raises my blood sugar levels. I do eat loads of oily fish and cook with rapeseed oil that is rich in omega 3 (I don't like olive oil).

Having said all that, what was the breakdown of your cholesterol? The total is meaningless on its own. You need to know the HDL, LDL, and triglycerides. Have you got these?

The type of fats can make a big difference. Just like the fuel in your car. Personally I need to eat more plant fats such as EVOO, avocado, olives, nuts/seeds as opposed to saturated fats and plant/seed oils. I eat lots of fish and white poultry and when I do eat red meat it is 100% grass fed. A large portion of my fats is avocado.

What types/kinds of fats have you been eating?

Hi. Just a couple of points. 1] 4.2 is not high ! 2] the overall figure doesn't really say so much as it is the total of both "good" and ""bad" cholesterol - so you need to see a breakdown. 3] Undoubtedly, from my experience, the experience of others and from the up-to-date advice of my unusually plugged in consultant diabetes specialist - low carb is the diet that works, so long as it is personally sustainable and you maintain good fats and fibre. 4] this diet (ie. LCHF) also tends to increase the good cholesterol and reduce the bad...so it suits Type 2s. One other thing..how do you know for sure that the statins caused the "side effects"? Good luck.

Hi Doris,

Yeah it is a shock when you first start checking what some food does to your levels. My breakfasts were always toast or cereal until I saw what they did! You need to identify alternatives to make life easier...I find M & S smoked cheese slices (0 carbs), dried bacon slices (0 carbs), a few brazil nuts or walnuts (low carbs) and John West tuna infusions (chilli in particular - very low carbs) among other things pretty nice...but you need to keep it varied. What helped my on the cereal front (as an addict) was someone telling me that if you take the sugar out of most cereals, there is as much nutritional value there as there is a a bowl of cardboard. So...test, eat, test a couple hours later and record. Good luck - do let me know how you progress..anything you want an opinion on, don't hesitate to ask...I could talk for Scotland. Paul
