High Days and Holidays

I just wanted to ask fellow low carbers about their attitude to eating on high days and holidays.

1) Do you stick to the low carb diet on your Birthday or Christmas (other religions' celebrations available :) ) though actually you'd quite like to trough on down and it makes you a bit sad? or

2) Do you say 'What the Heck, it's only once in a blue moon' and eat everything you would have eaten pre diagnosis? or

3) Has experience taught you that if you do 2) you feel really unwell so you don't eat the carbs but don't mind? or

4) Has the low carb way of life altered your taste buds so you neither crave nor relish the higher carb stuff?

Birthday in 6 weeks, already wondering how I'll feel about a different approach..

I have a break from the diet just for the day so I enjoy myself and get right back on the diet the day after. Then look forward to the next special occasion - birthday, Christmas, New Year's Eve etc. That helps with the willpower to be good the rest of the time :)

Hi
i have found that i can have a whiskey and diet lemonade on a friday night. And it does'nt affect my levels at all .So my brother comes up every friday he has his cans of lager i have my tipple in a large tall glass with approx 10ml of whiskey and thats what i can look forward to (My little treat :D ) every ones different. This idea came from a weight watchers diet my wife had) . Pr-diagnosis was lots and lots of lager /day
however my new life style ref: strict diet (no take aways) Cream cakes :( "God i like cream cakes")   . I'm loosing weight at approx 3lb / wk ( I reward myself on a friday with a couple of whiskey's ) You have to treat yourself with something you like That fits with you. The discipline is to make the treat a goal./ wk or 2 wk. Hope this helps its all about testing i test 4/day and i'm on gliclazide 2 x 80mg with breckie and 2 x with dinner. :D

good luck !

I had a carb blow out last night, not sure why. Several slices of Christmas Cake (made before diagnosis, been in a sealed box since Christmas and still moist because of all the brandy I fed it with - **** it was good) and a chip butty with the whitest of white bread. Didn't dare do my two hour bloods after that lot

Anyhow, blood sugar ok this morning at 5.8 but I feel like I've got a hangover. Exhaustede, dehydrated and just plain rough. I guess that answers my question for me, my high days and holidays will be a lot of adaptation and maybe a leetle, leetle bit of naughty stuff..

Shame, I had been looking forward to Option 2, but it just ain't worth what I'm feeling like today.

 @ hangover
Was it good at the time?

There must have been a lot of brandy in that cake - maybe that's what kept your readings down?

I found that a tiny Christmas pud didn't affect me as much as a mince pie - weird!

I'm having a night out with a special friend on Saturday, and I shall eat and drink more-or-less what I want. I've been off sugary things for so long, in my 45-year history of dieting, that I usually have cheese instead of pud anyway.

Call it 'research', and take your readings as usual just to see what happens - that's how I coped with Christmas!

Have a good time, whatever.

Viv :)
