Hello all,
This is my first post, but you seem like a friendly bunch with an amazing amount of knowledge on all things diabetes, so I decided to take the plunge and go from lurker to participant.

Anyway, I'll spare you my full history for now, but since my mum died in feb 2016 I've been neglecting myself and my diabetes. Not enough to neglect my medication, but after swallowing my metformin (2 x 500mg) and Jardiance (10mg) and giving myself the 1,8 units of Victoza I'd be in complete denial. Gradually I gained the 20 kgs I'd lost up to her death and then another few kgs, and I became ever so tired. I'd wake up, and still feel tired. Every little thing I had to do would take an incredible amount of 'pulling myself together'. I knew that my complete lack of energy must be down to very high BS, but didn't give a toss. I knew that if I didn't change my ways I'd join my mum soon enough, and I still didn't give a toss, and I was caught in a very vicious circle.

March 2018. I managed to drag myself off the couch and go see my endocrinologist for my bi-annual check-up. My A1c was 13.4 and when she spoke the word "insulin" she might as well have hit me with a hammer. What a threat! Instead she increased my dosage of Jardiance to 25mg.

I went home and started cutting down on my carbs. Actually I was desperate and cut down on most things food-related. I'd rather go hungry than go on insulin. I must've done something right, because my estimated A1c is now 5,7%, according to my BG monitor app. Also I've shed approx. 6 kgs, which is a bonus. All this since March 22nd.

And after much rambling let me get to the point. My BS this morning. Normally its in the 5s and 6es, but this morning it was 7,3. I didn't believe my eyes and decided to do another right away. 7,7!! What! Then a 3rd (in a different and better?? finger). 8. All within one minute. 5 minutes later 8,1. Right now it's 8,2, and I still haven't eaten or drunk anything - not even water. What's going on? I always wash my hands before checking. Yes', the test strips are new. Last night 3 hours after my meal it was 6,7, so who fed me Cadbury's while I was asleep?
Please share your knowledge. I'm feeling quite bewildered here ...

Hi and welcome and well done on getting the weight down. Don't worry too much about BS changes over short periods of time. We all find strange things from time to time which can't be explained. Just keep going with the low carbs and have enough fats and proteins to keep you feeling full; without that you will be driven to increase the carbs again. It's possible if you stay within a good weight range that the Victoza can be reduced or stopped but obviously discuss that with the GP.

Thanks, Daibell. It is my plan to get of the Jardiance and Victoza, but only when I'm ready. It's way too early days yet. I've experienced a freak BS once before, but I put that down to my Freestyle Freedom Lite or the test strip. It read 16.something, but I managed to get that result down to normal within one minute, and wasn't worried. Anyway, I feel fine, but puzzled.

One other small point, not all your blood has exactly the same glucose level at the same time.

Switching fingers for multiple tests will usually yield different results.

Welcome to the forum @briped
I think you could be experiencing the Dawn Phenomenon. Which is a natural rise in blood sugar due to a surge of hormones secreted at night which trigger your liver to dump sugar into your blood to help prepare you for the day.

Thanks catinahat. Stupid liver dumping stuff into my blood, wrecking havoc with my stats! I've never experienced it before, but then it's been years since I monitored my BS as closely as I do now.

Fun fact! I didn't know that and thought I was joking.
