High hba1c

Hi, I've been to my GP today. In February I had a hba1c test but I wasn't told the result. They just said everything was ok. Today I was told that the result was 74, not good. I've got to go for another hba1c test in June. I'm looking for advice, tips and help to bring it down. I currently on Novorapid 10u at breakfast, 15u at lunch and 15u at dinner. I also take 52u of Levemir before bed

Firstly the a1c test gives average blood sugars over the previous months so changing anything now will not affect the result by a huge margin If the next test is only a couple of weeks away.

What are your daily readings like and what sort of food are you eating?

Thanks for replying, I've been monitoring my blood glucose levels more since going to my GP. They are still coming up at 10 and more, not many have been sub 10! Regards eating the right foods, I don't binge on sweets, chocolate etc, just the usual breakfast cereal, sandwiches and home cooked meals.

Don't know your history so apologies if it sounds like I'm teaching you to suck eggs here, but many people on this forum give cereals a wide berth, and some would do the same with bread. Your comment about sweets and chocolates leads me to ask if you realise that all carbohydrates turn to glucose in the body (again apologies if I'm stating the obvious). Cereals, pasta, rice and bread are high in carbohydrate content and will raise your BG if you're not taking the sufficient amount of insulin to cover them.
 
It's possible that the long acting insulin isn't working well, I have just demonstrated that Lantus doesn't work at all for me. Finally seen a hospital consultant this week and have now started on a different insulin. Might be worth looking into, I stumbled across the answer when I forgot to take my Lantus a couple of times and found no difference in my glucose reading the next day.
 
Do you attend a diabetic clinic at the hospital or your GP practice? Either way, I'm surprised you were told all was well in February.

As urbanracer said, it will make little difference to your HbA1c if you change things now.

If you haven't been to a carbohydrate counting and insulin adjustment course, like DAFNE, ask to go on one.
