High in the morning

Hi there,

I have been low carbing for 4 days now and I take 2 metformin with my breakfast and 2 with my evening meal.
My sugar this morning before breakfast was 11.5 :( .
Can anyone shed any light on this.
I had nothing to eat at all last night after my evening meal of chicken salad at 6-30pm.

There are a few possible reasons. Everyone gets funny readings and when I get something totally unexpected, I test on another finger and even a third occasionally. The blood sample by finger prick isn't the best quality and has various other fluids in it. Also, meters are required to be within 20% of the true value 95% of the time. That means 1 in 20 can be way out, an outlier and it is only the average of the other 19/20 readings that is likely to be accurate.

Also, if you were entering into a fasting mode having not eaten so much the previous day, your liver is likely to dump a lot of stored energy from fats into your blood. It tends to do this in the mornings. Even if you didn't eat a single carbohydate, your body will attempt to keep you supplied by drawing on its stores. Also, if you are losing weight,as your fats break down, your BG goe sup. It does this in an irregular way too, so it is hard to know what is going on.

What will happen over time is that all your readings will go down, even these funny highs. You'll still get them but they shouldn't be as high and not as frequent.

Hi Fiona,
I am also on metformin 2000mg and a gliclazide. My readings are also high between 12/16 through out the day, on the odd occasion they have been 8.
It's very confusing as if I don't eat any carbs readings are quite good, but the nurse told me to eat a wide variety of foods so they could see how my body reacts to tablets.
I have been diagnose type 2 last month, but wonder if my readings stay high what they will do next review!
Are you newly diagnosed?

Louise I was diagnosed about 18 months ago but only been on the tablets a few weeks. And it seems that since then my sugars are all over which is why I am trying the low carb thing. I am just going to test in a moment 0pre lunch wish me luck :D :D

:) :) :) :) I just tested at 7.0 had strawberroes and natural yoghurt for brekkie at 8.30 and few cuppa's since :D :D :D
I am really pleased with that as my nurse says she will accept my Hba 1 at 7.5 or less xxx :D :D :D
