High Levels of Glucose

Type of diabetes
Type 2
I had a few high readings lately of 33.5, 27.3, 32.7. I take Forziga. It doesn't seem to be working. There hasn't been a test to see what type 2 diabetes I have - over production of glucose by pancreas or glucose resistance. When diagnosed, I asked for an endocrinologist, but haven't seen one yet. The dx was 2.5 years ago. Do people with diabetes generally know the nature of their type 2 diabetes and what medications work? Thank you, kindly.

Glucose is not produced by the pancreas. The pancreas produces insulin among other things. It is 'Insulin Restance' that can be a problem (your use of 'glucose resistance' has me doubting that you have understood the underlying basics).

As Antje has said, those high levels should have led you to seeking medical attention as a matter of urgency.
Even if your glucose levels have fallen since you got those readings you need to see a health care professional as soon as possible. Best wishes.

Thank you so much. I do indeed want so much to understand and would love to have an endocrinologist. I misquoted about the glucose...my fogged head is another part of what is happening. Is there a test to determine if the pancreas is "tired" and not producing enough insulin...or that my liver (a non alcoholic fatty liver) is not processing as it should? Thank you also for urging e.r. I tried to get in to see my physician, but is not available for another 4 weeks.

Also, if one is insulin resistant, wouldn't that determine the type of meds one would take? If one is insulin resistant, is puzzles me why one would be on insulin.

Hello! I wouldn't wait 4 weeks, please get in touch with the 111 to discuss, or take yourself to A&E (Accident and emergency), if a UK resident of course. I was diagnosed type 1 at 28.7! I couldn't imagine being that high again! I hope you get better very soon :) please update us

I'd say A+E with those numbers. Have you been tested for type1?
Thank you Antje77. No about testing...at all. I was asked to go in for testing but because my glucose was too high at that point, they couldn't do the testing. What is meant by A+E?

Thank you, so very much. Wow about being diagnosed type 1 at 28.7! And hopefully, you never reach that again. Just by connecting here today has helped a lot. Thank you, again.

A+E accident and emergency.. if your blood sugars are really high you need to get to a hospital not wait weeks to see a doctor.

Have you thought that it may be your diet that is contributing to such high levels?
Please forgive me if you already know this but carbohydrates in the foods we eat are turned into glucose almost immediately and it is this glucose that we measure with our meters. If you cut down on the carbohydrates in your diet then the levels of glucose in your blood will fall. As for the non alcohol fatty liver disease (NAFLD) this will benefit from cutting down on your fruit intake, the fructose in fruit (a particular type of carbohydrate) is stored in the liver as fat.

I suggest that you try getting an appointment with your Diabetes Specialist Nurse. Tell the receptionist that your blood glucose levels have become acutely high. If you get no joy then it has to be a walk in centre if there is one near you. Honestly speaking, I would not have hesitated to go straight to the hospital if I saw such high readings.

What is your level right now? If it's still this high, are you aware this might well be dangerous?
Not really important exactly how type2 works, important is not being carried of in an ambulance right now and landing on Intensive Care.

I was diagnosed with type 1 at the age of 43. My local doctor assumed I was type 2 because of my age but my blood sugar levels just kept staying up at 30+

By the time I was properly diagnosed I was very ill.

Have you told your doctor how high your results are? Which country are you in?
