Hi
My 10 year old granson is a type 1.When he is at home his levels are ok around 5 to 6 . He stays with me and his grandmar of a week end and has done so since he was small. But his levels go right up at weekends between 15 to 20.Could it be that we are doing something wrong he has been a type 1 for almost 2 years now.Any help you could you give us would be great.
Thanks a lot.

We'd need more information to be able to help you. Is your grandson on twice daily injections or does he take an injection at each meal time? Do you count the carbohydrates in the food he's going to eat and injection an amount of insulin according to those carbohydrates? Sometimes kids run higher levels over a weekend if they're less active at home than they are on school days. When at home there's also a temptation to snack more regularly which can affect his blood sugar levels.

Those readings are quite high so there are a few things you can consider:

Are you carb counting accurately? Counting total carbohydrates rather than just sugar?
If he has a carb snack inbetween meals is he injecting to cover the snack and not just main meals?
Is it possible that he's sneaking other food without you knowing?
When you test his blood sugar are his hands clean and not contaminated with sugar from fruit or snacks?
Are you testing 2 hours plus from the last meal? In a space less than 2 hours from eating his BG might be elevated, but 15 to 20 mmol/L is quite high.
Is he less active on the weekend compared to weekdays? It could be that he needs to have a different basal over weekends.
Double check any squash drinks he might be having are no added sugar ones rather than full sugar.
Double check any sweets he might be having are carbohydrate free rather than just sugar free. I've seen sweets at M&S advertised as sugar free but they are still high in carbohydrates.

hi, good suggestions from Sophia. it could also be that he is more active during the school week and that he needs more insulin at the weekends to cover the same amount of food. This is certainly true of my son who's ratios are different at the weekend to those during a school week.

Thanks for the help he is a good kid and wont have any thing with out asking. The one that stands out is not doing a lot at week ends I think that could be the problem,so will look at changeing that and see what happens.
Thanks for your help
