Hi ,

I am a type 2 diagnosed 6 years ago (almost to the day) . My last Hba1C was 6.5 a month ago. My BS reading after work and before my evening meal is usually in the range
of 5 to 7, and just before going to bed, is around 7.
However, my morning readings are anything from 8.5 to 11.5. My doctor said don't worry as long as it is below 10! . Just wondered what people's opinion was on this advice ?.
Thanking you in advance for your comments.

Welcome to the forum.....

higher insulin resistance in the morning due to a hormonal response designed to assist us start the day after long periods of fasting.......

as a type 1 on a pump I can program it to give me more in the hours approaching waking...........

as a type 2, oral medications can usually help in the first instance......

are you on any........?

I am a T2 and from what I've learnt on this site, this could be a liver dump (dawn phenomenon). Where you body releases a load of sugar into your bloodstream to get you started for the day. Do you take your BS reading when you wake or when you sit down for breakfast. For me that makes a big difference. Usually on waking I am around 6.6 - 7.3 but by the time I'm ready for breakfast its up to around 7.9 to 8.3 or higher.

Hi I take 80mg of Gliclazide and 1000mg of Metformin (standard version) with my breakfast and with my evening meal, thank you .

I would of thought having those medications on board would help get your numbers down............

do you have anything to eat before bed.......?

Hello, thanks for replying, I try and eat no later than 7.00pm and g to bed around 11.00 pm.

Hi, I will try taking it when I wake, I usually do it around 45 minutes later, thanks.

You should see a difference. Rushing about, having a shower, getting dressed etc can all cause rises if the tummy is empty. Try as soon as you get out of bed. Let us know what happens.

Hello again. I took a reading as soon as I got up, a tested again about 45 minutes later, the reading had increased by 1 unit in that time !. Thanks for your replies.

I am a bit confused to read that the numbers get increased after some activities like taking shower, rushing.....compared to those at early morning when martin woke up. I thought after passing out some additional time and having some activities before breakfast the numbers should get down instead of going up.
Do anybody else has anything to share in the forum?

The reason for this is the liver dump. If your liver senses there is no food in your tummy it thinks there is too little glucose so is likely to dump its own glucose to keep you going, especially if you are using energy up rushing about. This is a perfectly natural occurrence. That is putting it very simply, but basically is what happens. Having a shower or bath is a bit different as this causes your blood to flow faster and can raise levels in some people, whether fasting or not.

Thanks for your reply, so it seems to be "Dawn Phenomenan" ?. Is there any advice on dealing with it, or "is it one of those things".

Many years ago, seem to recall that my late Uncle (also type 2) had a small snack at night to prevent this ??

I've been trying to combat it... I have found that if I eat my breakfast shortly after waking - I don't seem to suffer from it. ie this morning I was 5.8 and 2rs later I was 5.2. However most days I find I find this a bit of an issue as I start work early so I take my breakfast with me and eat it at work, ie I get up at 06:30am and eat breakfast at 8am so then my readings will be different, 6.7 fasting, 8.3 before breakfast, 9.8 after breakfast.

I've tried various things like having a snack or taking my meds before my drive to work but it doesn't seem to help and when I go for my annual checkup I will ask the doctor what he recommends, really I need to get up earlier and eat breaky straight away, but to be honest I cant face it...
