These are all common symptoms of Type 1 (Insulin dependant) Diabetes.

Possible cause for this could be that any residual Pancreatic Function that she had has now diminished to such a level that her insulin doses will need to be adjusted to compensate. (If she is T1, and if she is on insulin).

Are these syptoms common

Yes.

What is hyper/hypo glamic ???

Hyperglycemic - High Blood Glucose (BG)
Hypoglycemic - Low Blood Glucose (BG)

Hypo's often occur when you over medicate (too much insulin). Hypers can happen for many different reasons.

The normal range (ie - non-diabetic) for BG levels is 4 - 7 mmol/L (millimoles/litre).

Thanks for the replies - useful

She is not currently taking insulin -

Her reading was 33 on Monday night at hospital

It reduced to 14-16 Tuesday afternoon

Went down to 10 early this morning now increased to 13 & 14

She was weighed and she had lost one stone in six days

She been on a drip at Hospital for last 48 hours and doesnt feel thirsty now
but having problem eating much without feeling sick .

Feeling very tired lack if energy

Dave, not surprised your poor wife feels ill!

I would find out whatteh hospital are giving her in the drip...it could be something called a sliding scale, which is where the are giving her insulin to try and control her blood sugar level. As Cugilla said....find out what the hospital has to say.

Hi Dave,

I had similar problems to your wife about a year after being diagnosed Type 2. I didn't get quite as ill as I managed to realise things were going wrong sooner. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I had been misdiagnosed as Type 2 and actually have some other form of diabetes and have been put on insulin - the specialist told me he believes I will become Type 1 eventually i.e. my pancreas is gradually stopping insulin production. At the moment, it sometimes produces enough and sometimes doesn't - when it doesn't, I can very quickly go up into the 20s even without much carb. He told me that about 15 to 20% of Type 2s are misdiagnosed because the condition resembles Type 2 at first and responds to the same treatment for a short while, but while Type 2 progresses gradually over many years, this type of diabetes progresses quickly - usually within 2 years of diagnoses. He also said there are about 20 different forms of diabetes and I might never know exactly what my condition is. I'm not saying your wife has the same diabetes as me, simply that it could be that she has progressed more quickly than Type 2 does into insulin dependance. You need to ask the doctors what they are checking her for - another type of diabetes, an infection or something else. Incidentally, while I was ill with this, I was tested for glandular fever as they said that illness causes havoc with diabetics' BGs - ask them what blood tests they have taken and what the results have been.

I hope your wife feels better soon.

Hi

Her blood sugar levels came down to 10 and went back up to 14

Over last twenty four hours stopped feeling thirsty

Her eyes are tired and she is struggling to keep food down

She weighs herself weekly and when she was weighed at hospital
she lost one stone in seven days .

Hopefully if everything stays stable in next twenty four hours she should come
home

Advice given useful thanks

Hi

She is on a sliding scale now so the problem is diabetic related

Her reading went down to 10 and increased up to 13 & 14 but not gone any higher

Spent third night in hospital but a bit more stable now

That's good. Although they are treating the high Bg levels do they know what the cause is ?
Have they told you ?

Hope she gets better soon.

Thanks

She is being put on insulin and she will start tomorrow

Her weight has stabled she is eating a bit and her eyesight is a little better
she is watching a bit of tv for the first time since Sunday

Hi All

She has been stable on blood sugar levels today between 7-10

Eyesight starting to get better but still a bit tired

Able to watch tv and read as well

She has been told she should be able to come home at weekend

Likely to be Sunday as is waiting for results on blood tests etc

Thanks for the advice and help with questions been a great help :D

Hi Dave,

Really glad she's on the mend. You soon get used to the insulin injections even though it can seem like the end of the world at first. Personally, I was just relieved to have some treatment that was actually working and that the weight loss stopped!

Let us know how her results go.
