High reading

Hi Alicia.
How's it going today?
Let us know if you need ideas for what to eat - it's a scary new world for a lot of us - but we're in it together :)

Geoff

Hello :) I have really tried today woke up with a fasting reading of 17.3, had Alpen for breakfast, then pea and ham omelette for lunch then gammon for tea. Tried to test tonight but my reader said error 2. Twice so don't know why that happened. Is there a cereal anyone would recommend? Thanks Alicia

Hi Alicia, that happens sometimes with the test strips which is pretty annoying .I think it can sometimes be not enough blood from the pinprick..Your lunch and dinner sounds good in my humble opinion as a newbie but I got a really high reading one morning after muesli so I would check on.how that affects you :)

Yeah I don't think the musli is good, also is full fat milk better? Also are low fat Alpen bars ok for a snack, I don't like nuts and already eat a lot of fruit. Will it take longer than a week for my gliclazide to help? Thanks

I would say the alpen bars are full of sugar and high carb too. I know its not easy this new way of eating .I didnt touch fruit at all at first and when.my levels started to look better I began having a few strawberries ,blueberries as they are low GI . I have them with some plain yogurt and some flaked almonds! Full fat milk ok I think at least but Im not 100% as I dont drink it anyway..

As far as I know, Gliclazide takes a few weeks to reach its maximum effectiveness. But IMO it would be a mistake to rely on meds to get your BGs down instead of reducing carbs. The meds will only decrease your BGs by a certain amount, it's changing what you eat that will do most of the job.

Alpen Bars have up to 68g of carb so I wouldn't be able to eat them because they would increase my BGs too much. Check the nutritional panel on the packet to find out how many carbs in the bars you have.

My preferred breakfast is full fat Greek natural yoghurt, with berries. Or eggs and bacon. No cereals or toast for me.

Your BG meter can help you find out which foods are best to eat and not eat.

Hi @Aliciajones215 please watch the fruit. The media portrait of fruit is that natural sugars are good. Well guess what that natural sugar "fructose" is worse than glucose. Here are the reasons why:
  • Fructose is unregulated by the body so it gets released into your blood stream as fast as the gut releases it. Raiing your Blood Glucose levels up significantly in a huge spike.
  • Fructose turns off your "I'm full receptors" (natures little way to get you to stuff yourself for fat stores for the winter months)
  • Fructose will not be metabolised into energy unless there is absolutely nothing else for the body to use.
  • Fructose will just be stored by your fat cells raising your triglyceride
  • Your nerve, eye and kidneys cells will metabolise up to 25% of the fructose using the polyol pathway when you have high blood glucose levels (at normal levels it is under 5%). This has a huge effect on trig (up), HDL (down) and Vit D levels (down)
  • Sucrose (normal sugar in foods and on your table) breaks down to 60% glucose and 40% fructose so you are getting far more than you think
  • Many processed foods use fructose syrup (esp low fat)
  • Fructose has a direct relationship to blood pressure (thanks to @Brunneria for this paper) and the recommendation is to stay below 25g per day even for someone without diabetes (almost impossible with today's diet)

Tested last night and had the HI Reading in my meter. Seeing the diabetic nurse later on today Alicia

Fingers crossed you get some good advice and help from the nurse. Let us know how it goes.

Can you tell us what you ate yesterday?

Also, are you testing several times a day, because IMO you need to know before you get above 33 that your BGs are rising that much. You should call 111 for advice if they go above 20, to reduce the risk of HHS, which means a hospital visit.

I am starting to wonder if you have a type of diabetes other than T2, or whether you are eating too much carb. It's more likely that you need to low carb for at least 2 weeks to see a big drop in BGs.

You mentioned some blood tests earlier regarding the type of diabetes, do you remember what they were called?

Please let us know how you are doing.
