High readings after breakfast!

Hi there,
am new to this but thought I'd see if anyone had any suggestions.

Type 1 for over 17 years, and I'm currently 6 weeks pregnant. For the past week or so my reading 1-2hrs after breakfast has been mentally high! Have app to see nurse next week, but just thought I' see what I can find out before then because it's driving me mad! I know that levels can go crazy in pregnancy but it's the same thing every day so there must be something I can do to fix it.

On Lantus and NovoRapid, using 1:8. I've kept upping my breakfast dose (this morning did 3 times my usual dose!) and STILL the high reading!

The rest of the day I'm fine, when I wake I'm usually a bit higher than I would like, but have checked overnight and no hypos, so it's not DP. Feel like I've tried everything... :[

Just wandered if anyone had any suggestions, or knew what is causing this.

Thanks,
Rach.xx

Hi Rach.

Here is a link to a site which offers plenty of advice for those that are pregnant. Take a look.
http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/p ... /index.htm

The priority appears to be to keep those Bg levels down.

You really need to discuss this with your GP or Nurse to get the best advice. What's good for you is also good for baby.

Best wishes with the pregnancy.

Thanks, will check it out. Have just read somewhere that it could be caffeine related, so will try cutting out as well.

Thanks again,

In general people tend to be more insulin resistant in the morning (possibly due to Dawn Phenomenon) and as such its harder to tolerate carbs in the morning. I take more insulin in the morning and can eat an identical bit of food (soy and linseed toasted bread) and find a jump of about 5 in the morning, but only a jump of about 2-3 at night, on 4u less insulin.

I know T2's need to eat breakfast to avoid possible liver dumps in the morning and T1's have the same hormones too (insulin aside) so no reason why we shouldnt suffer the counter regulatory hell that is glycogen, adrenaline, growth hormone and cortisol - aka Good Morning, time to get up hormones!

Lots of T1's morning ratios need to be increased

With you being pregnant you also have the wonky female hormones to contend with to.
So, by all means be caffeine free (good for baby anyway) but maybe adjust ratios a bit? Think that will be your role for next 9 months anyway - constant adjustment
