Hello everyone.I was just wanting some advice on high bloodsugar readings. My daughter goes to bed between 7.30pm and 8pm.On going to bed her bloodsugar is usually at aroung 5-7.She does like to have a supper so I usually bolus for a pancake or a piece of toast. When I check again at 10pm it is always around 15 which I then correct This has been the case for the last week. The consultant thought perhaps it could be her supper. However as my daughter has always had a supper I dont think she would be happy going to bed without it.Last night for supper she had a total of 6 grams of carbs and her bloodsugar was 7.4.Her bloodsugar was still 15.5 at 10pm????This is all sooo frustrating as i am sure you all know.Any advice would be greatfully received.martinax

You may well have to ask your daughter if for one night she could go without the supper so that you can do a fasting test.....perhaps let her have it in the afternoon instead??? I know-not the same...

It could be that her bolus really does need adjusting. I got told by my consultant that if high/low 2-3 hours after a bolus...first thing to look at is the carb ratio....and this for me, is almost double for my evening meals.....to that of my afternoon ones....

Hope others will come along with some ideas too...

This rise could be down to a few things.

It might just be that her body has gone through some changes and at that time of the day her insulin requirements are greater. This might be resolved by giving a bigger bolus with supper.

It might be down to her basal being wrong and the rise is due to the background insulin rather than the bolus given at supper time.

It could be down to the food given at tea being slowly digested. For instance pasta and pizza are very slow at releasing their carbs which can make bgs spike several hours later.

You might have to start doing some night time checks to see what her bg is doing through the night. Perhaps tonight you could give a carb free supper something like a sugar free jelly and some cheese. If her bg has then risen a few hours later this will probably indicate a need to increase the basal.

Hope this gives you a few ideas. May be some other people will be along later to add their thoughts too.
