My husband has been on insulin for about a month now after having good control of his diabetes type 2 since 1998, but he is now insulin deficient and has had to move to injecting once a day, with one metformin tablet in the morning. He is not overweight (in fact he is loosing weight fast and now weighs under 8 stone) and has a healthy lifestyle with dancing and bowls and eats a healthy diet. We are due to go on a course called T2onic for further advice on his condition in a couple of weeks, but his readings are always in the high teens, both in the morning and at tea time, and they do not seem to be getting any better and it's really getting him down. He is due to see his diabetic nurse next week, but has big concerns about the effect that the high readings are having on his internal organs, can anyone offer any advise please.

If the weight loss is not deliberate then that is alarming. Ask for C Peptide and GAD antibody tests in case he is LADA misdiagnosed as Type 2.

Ring the nurse too, she may suggest increasing the insulin by 10% at a time to get the bg down. Till further testing can be done

Thanks for that, he's going to ask the nurse for the tests you suggests when he rings her tomorrow.

I had rapid weight loss before being diagnosed with ketoacidosis and type 1, also unquenchable thirst, frequent urination and fatigue. Has he tested for ketones?

I agree with Spiker; sounds a possible LADA to me. I would ask the nurse to move on to a Basal/Bolus insulin regime as for a T1. My DN did this after a few weeks when she could see that once a day Levemir wasn't going to do the job. With Basal/Bolus the ability to inject rapid insulin for most meals based on the carb content makes a vast difference to sugar control and you can then adjust the Basal independently of the meal-time carbs to match the liver's continuous glucose output. My HBa1C is now near to 6% whereas it was 8.3 when I was just on 3-level tablets.

It's just possible the nurse won't know the term LADA but you can say "late onset type 1 diabetes" and that will get the point across.
