My husband has had type 2 for about 14 years and has been really well controlled and is not overweight, in fact he could do with putting a few pounds on. The problem is that we came back from holiday a fortnight ago and although we had been quite active (sightseeing from dusk to dawn!) and only ate two meals a day with no desserts and very little alcohol, since returning his readings are regularly about 20. We dance 3 times a week and even after 3 hours dancing his reading is still 12 or 13 and he is in despair as to what to do. He has contacted his diabetic nurse who says that it could take up to 6 weeks to return to normal but does anyone have any advice to offer please.

Did the nurse offer any explanation why his levels become so much higher after the holiday? Was his diet any different than usual on holiday? Is your husband on medication? Any changes in medication?

Regards

Pavlos

Well, he's been overweight but over the last few years he has gradually lost weight, in fact he's pretty thin now, but the nurse isn't concerned. She wasn't concerned about his readings after the holiday either, just said that they would level themselves out in about 6 weeks or so. He's on Glixalide twice a day and one Metformin the morning but has kept him pretty stable up to now - his last change in medication was about a year ago and he's been find. On holiday we definitely didn't eat as healthily as at home - as we were in America, and there was a lot of fast food available - we did our best, but very little fruit or veg was on offer, and we didn't overeat at all, in fact I have to watch my weight and didn't put any on at all. I must admit that he is worrying about these high levels though and he did lose his Father in November, but seems to have come to terms with that, although maybe is a delayed reaction, I don't know.

And have some dry white or red wine along with low carb. In my experience a few glasses of wine works wonders with bg levels.
