I eat my tea about 7pm, go to bed at 9, no food or drink at all through night, next morning at 9am before having anything my sugars are 10.2. How can this be??

It sounds like dawn phenomenon/liver dump. If you do a search on the forum for dawn phenomenon you'll find lots of info about it. Basically it's a normal phenomenon where our liver dumps extra glucose into our bloodstream to give us energy for activities when we wake up. It is possible to reduce this blood sugar level by working on our blood sugar throughout the day. It can take a while, but eventually the fasting blood sugar level can come down.

Yep what Catlady said :) in most of us its the highest reading of the day , so when you get your bloods sugars down overall that will drop as well.........
