Hi all, I'm really struggling to keep my blood sugars down over night? I go to bed with a normal blood sugar level, last night it was 4.4 ( I felt fine at this level) and had no hypo to treat throughout the night yet I woke up with a reading of 14.2 at 9am. I take 40 units of levemir at 11pm and I feel that this is a lot yet I can't understand why they're rising so high over night! anyone else have this problem? any help is hugely appreciated!
Thanks

40 units of levemir at 4.4...makes me think you went hypo without waking up...which caused a liver dump. You might want to try a bit of basal testing...I find splitting my levemir dose helps to avoid night time hypos. @noblehead has a good link for instructions on how to do this

What is a liver dump? How do you mean split it? As in morning and night? I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle at the moment it's so stressful, I'm trying my hardest to get them under control as me and my partner want to start trying for a family but I'm not getting anywhere.

A liver dump is when your liver releases glucose in response to a hypo.
Split dose is exactly that...not sure quite how newly diagnosed you are or how confident you would be in tweaking your insulin regime so you might be best to take advice from your DN on how to do it. Do some basal testing so that your DN has something to go on.
Be patient...you're still fairly new to it all and there is a lot to learn...keep browsing the forum...there is a whole load of really useful info on here.

Thank you!

I've been diagnosed around 15 months but have only seen my DSN twice in that time so I've not had much support and I'm still unsure about a lot of things which is why I've joined the forum. :) I have an appt at the end of the month so I will ask her then.

There's so much to take in and from what I can see everyone is different!

Thank you for your replies it really is appreciated!

Hi Jodie...

4.4 with that much dose of Levemir is way too low, you should get your BS up to around the 8.0 mark as your courting trouble with it low, my Levemir is split, I have 22 at night and the same in the morning.

When do you last eat?

Perhaps you should also take some BS's after 4 hours to see how your going...

Stu.

This is the basal testing link that @Natalie1974 mentions earlier, it's for pump users but the advice is much the same about how to test in different time frames:

It is possible that you went low in the night and your liver compensated (hence your high morning bg level), this called the Samogyi Effect and a Google search will give a you more info, but even with tight night-time bg levels I'd be reluctant to go to bed on a level of 4.4

Sorry to hear you are not getting much support from your DN. You might want to ask about going on a DAFNE course. There is also an online carb counting course folks here recommend. I think your insulin regime might need some adjustment, in consultation with your DN. Don't be afraid to advocate for what you need from them. You are entitled to reasonable support to enable you to manage your diabetes well and avoid problems.
