What did you eat yesterday?Hi dear friends,so I am prediabetic and following high fat low carb diet with carb content never more than 10 gram ,so yesterday I ate few carbs but still less than 40 g ,my fasting which usually remains between 4.7 to 4.9 turned to 5.7 and I am very upset. Before starting low carb diet my fasting was between 5 to 5.4 ,can someone explain this to me please.
Few veggies n bread. Before starting low carb diet I was eating cookies ice creams breads milk and my fasting never went that up.What did you eat yesterday?
Yes 10 grams per day, and I am counting it perfectly and loosing weight too.It could be any one of a number of reasons. You cannot blame any one of them on the basis of a single reading. It takes many readings to show a trend, whether up or down.
Is that 10g of carbs a day or per meal? 10g carbs per day is very low if you are counting them correctly.
Are you making or buying low carb bread, as a standard slice of whole meal bread is around 15g carbs per slice?Few veggies n bread. Before starting low carb diet I was eating cookies ice creams breads milk and my fasting never went that up.
Hi Hazelac, as it has been mentioned 40 grams of carbs per day is not a lot and there are others on here who are also on a strict carb restriction too.Few veggies n bread.
The bread I ate ,had 12g carbs in one slice ,Are you making or buying low carb bread, as a standard slice of whole meal bread is around 15g carbs per slice?
There is the answer. The bread I ate ,had 12g carbs in one slice ,
2 bread slices 24 g
Mixed veggies one serve
Hi again Hazelac, by now you should be getting a little annoyed that every one is fixated on counting your carbs for you instead of answering your question and helping you understand why your reading when to from 4.7 to 5.7.Mixed veggies one serve
Which veggies? What size portion (s)? All vegetables do contain some carbs, some more than others.Mixed veggies one serve
I said yesterday I ate around 40 g carbs for the last 2 months I m not taking more than 10 gThere is the answer. You say you never go over 10g carbs per day but you have had 24g in just bread alone
Maybe you’ve answered your own question, higher carbs yesterday equates to higher fbs today, higher than your pre low carb eating as your body has got used to low carbs and the 40g came as a bit of a shock for it. However saying that it’s a one off readings that as others have said shouldn’t be taken in isolation but you need to test out your carb tolerance over several days if you want to raise it from the 10g you have been eating. Also 5.7 is very little different from the 5.4 upper limit of fasting bloods pre low carbing.I said yesterday I ate around 40 g carbs for the last 2 months I m not taking more than 10 g
Thanks for the answer ,now it is understandable ,so should I eat more carbs ? I m recently diagnosed with prediabetes and I am overweight with BMI 25.6 . I want to loose at least 10 kgs before my next ogtt as this time Dr wasn't very sure about the diagnosis ( hba1c 5.1) ( fasting 5.8 post 2 hr 8.3) .I randomly checked my sugar levels and always get good results . Can you please guide me bit more about low carb diet I am also doing intermittent fasting and literally avoiding carbs completely. Should I continue the same routine or adding carbs would be more beneficial?Maybe you’ve answered your own question, higher carbs yesterday equates to higher fbs today, higher than your pre low carb eating as your body has got used to low carbs and the 40g came as a bit of a shock for it. Hi and thanks for your help ,I am not annoyed at all I am very thankful to all of you .It's never easy to get time to help others by answering their queries .Hi again Hazelac, by now you should be getting a little annoyed that every one is fixated on counting your carbs for you instead of answering your question and helping you understand why your reading when to from 4.7 to 5.7.
First it is noting to worry about, readings fluctuate, there are so nanny outside factors other than food that can effect this, some thing as simple as a restless nights sleep can affect your reading so it's never to important to pay attention to any one reading.
IF you reading continue to go up over the course of a month or so then that's a different matter.
Something to remember is the device your using to take you blood sugar readings is only accurate to about 0.5 and taking that into account a reading of 4.7 +(0.5) = 5.2 just as the 5.7 -(0.5) = 5.2.
So both readings are with in the same margin of error even in the 5.7 seems raised an therefore more ominous.
When people will tell you not to worry about a couple of unexpected or raised readings it can come across as dismissive because nobody takes the time to dispel your fears. I hope after reading this you can see that the 5.7 is nothing to worry about.
The crazy thing is worrying about it can raise your blood sugar levels, so don't give it a second thought we are not machines and out bodies fluctuate all the time.
Some of us (not looking at anyone onein particular @bulkbiker ) flatulate all the time too.
6 grams in one serveWhich veggies? What size portion (s)? All vegetables do contain some carbs, some more than others.
My post pregnancy ogtt was prediabetic but my hba1c was normal ,I was in shock and didn't know from where I should start so after gaining knowledge from this forum I decided to start with lchf diet although I m not taking high fat.Hi Hazelac, as it has been mentioned 40 grams of carbs per day is not a lot and there are others on here who are also on a strict carb restriction too.
When your new to calculating the carb totals it can be easy to miss calculate, I always forgot to add in the carbs for onions when I added them to a recipe. Which took me over the total I was aiming for and could't understand why until I recognised my mistake.
You mentioned bread as it's been pointed out whole meal bread is 15g per slice, white bread 29g per slice both of these take you well over your 10g per day limit. 2 slices of white bread and 2 carrots would take you over your carb content for a whole week. are you sure you are counting it right? (1 carrot is 6 grams of carbs )
Hazelzac is there any reason you are on such a strict carb reduction?
You mentioned what you used to eat and you have doe a wonderful job changing your way of eating but is there any need to be so strict with yourself?
I can see why your GP is puzzled as your HbA1c is non diabetic but your fasting and 2 hour post ( I assume post GTT?) you’re quoting are elevated. However and I think I need to call on @Bluetit1802 to verify this but I think you won’t get an accurate glucose tolerance test if you’ve been on low carbs beforehand. This is for the same reason as your elevated fbs after a day at a higher level of carbs. You will almost certainly get high readings post GTT if your body has been used to a lower carb level. Thanks for the answer ,now it is understandable ,so should I eat more carbs ? have you been in my office sniffing?flatulate all the time too
