Hitting a wall?

Just under one month into LCHF following diagnosis of preD and I need a bit of encouragement please! My morning fasting levels range between 5.5 and 6.5 (6.8 on one occasion) and I have been trying to manage daytime spikes with increasing education.
I didn't get a print off of my blood test at the doctor's surgery. So I don't have more to go by but I guess I could ring and request. I know its my weight that has to come down as my BMI is 31 (I'm teetering around the 15 st mark and 5'9) which isn't good.

I've got to try more exercise and getting back into shopping for the new way of eating...but its hard and I've been abroad where the food wasn't that conducive and staying with others who served up potato and pasta based dishes was a challenge and not wishing to be rude in looking too fussy or rejecting their hospitality! Hopefully I will get back in the groove.

At least I must be better than before I was so aware of blood sugars and eating indiscriminately - grazing on fruit and the eat well plate starchy carbs.

Do other newbies hit a wall early on or am I being impatient in wanting to see levels come down when its still early days? The motivation to change things to avoid D is still there but its got to be for the long haul. I'm only 51.

Yep, don't expect miracles, your fasting levels are OK so just stay focused. What's your a1c? Maybe you could set yourself a target to reduce it to by the time you have the next a1c test done. (But make your target realistic and achievable otherwise never reaching it ultimately becomes demotivating.)

Take small steps and you'll get there.

Thank you :) I think I will need to phone for the test print out. My next blood test isn't until January which is quite a way off. I guess the a1c will give a more accurate reflection. As a newbie its been a steep learning curve but I will heed your advice re realistic goals.

At an afternoon tea at weekend, I succumbed to a cream scone with jam out of politeness!. Oh what a spike that caused!

I think you should ask for an HbA1c test to be done 3 months after your diagnosis, 12 months is too long IMO.

I don't think it's impolite to decline food if you tell them there's a medical reason. If possible, I let people know beforehand that I prefer not to eat high carb foods.

Ring your GP and request a print out of your Hb test so you know what you are aiming for in Jan and make a point of always getting a copy. I ring my GP and book myself in with the nurse when I would like my bloods done, I dont wait for them to call me and I dont accept 'they're fine' when the results are back. Its ok to have the occasional treat but beware that an occasional treat can quite easily turn into every day which is a lesson I have recently learnt. It is a good idea to work out your personal goals as it feels good as you achieve them.

You are SUCH early days yet - give your new Way of Eating a good try-out for at least two months? And if your fasting blood glucose hasn't lowered/reached your target? then consider your next step, if you feel you want to, and the range of treatment options out there - and there are more than a few! (I totally hear you on the age thing.) The LCHF may just need some tweaking to your body and your needs. (Which is where a blood glucose meter comes in.)

There are 'programs' (from books) like Diane Cress's 'The Diabetes Miracle' that Brunneria first got me onto in here, as well as Dr Bernstein's whole caboodle, as well as Dr Hyman's very good 'The Blood Sugar Solution' (I think it is called) - which are great and inspiring for pre-diabetics. I would go for 'The Diabetes Miracle' and 'The Blood Sugar Solution' first, as they are really upbeat and well presented (Dr Bernstein can be a bit depressing, from memory, even though the book is seminal - but not necessary for a pre-diabetic perhaps?) Inspiring (and fine-tuning your diet/exercise regimen), on top of your LCHF, may very well get you right away from that wall...
