Hiya my names Shirl and this is my first post on here and apologies in advance as i need to ask a question.
I have been feeling 'not right' for a while ie dead thirsty and needing to wee a lot !! One of the nurses were i work offered to test my urine, when she did it came back as 4+ glucose, she then asked if wouldnt mind having my blood sugar tested the nxt mornin. She tested it this morning and i got a reading of 22.9 :( .
I'm gonna go the docs fis=rst thing on Monday but just want to know if anyone knows what happens next, can i get the doc to test my urine and blood again? If the readings are still high what will he do, give me medication or get reffered to hospital???
Am really really worried at mo and wishing Monday would hurry up !!

Thx in Advance

Shirl

Hi Shirl, im Karyn, and I can only go on what I went through with my son, he was diagnosed 3 years ago. His blood glucose was up at 33 and he was taken straight into hospital where they stabilized him on a drip, then me and my husband had 3 days to learn how to test and give insulin injections. Im not sure how it works for adults, but it definately sounds like you need immediate medical treatment. Hope that helped in some way. :?

hya shirl and welcome,
treatment will all depend whether you are type 1 or 2, if u feel very unwell before your appointment plz seek medical help as type 1,s can become ill rather quickly , let us know how u get on :)

Thx guys :D
I'm up bright and early and will be at the doctos before it opens lol, tbh am worried sick and hardly slept last night but need to get sorted asap.
Will let ya know how it goes :?

Re: Hiya :-) (just been diagnosed!!)

Back from Docs and he was brill. Did finger prick test again and it was 19, so hes booked me into diabetic clinic, given me Metformin tablets and sticks to test my wee, gotta also go have blood test which apparently will give me an average blood suagr over last 3 months or summit :?
Feel loads better now and starting tablets later but have to slowly build up from 1 to 4 a day over next 2 weeks and now need to figure what i can eat and not eat lol, already promised my spare jar of marmalade to my mother in law cos doc said thats a no no :|

How long does Metformin take to get in your system, any advice greatly appreciated

Thx

Shirl

hya shirl,
glad u got sorted, not too sure about metformin as i took it with insulin but im sure a type 2 will be along soon :D

Hi Shirl,

There is some good advice on one of the threads on the greetings and introduction forum that helped me a lot when I was diagnosed type 2 in August.

The blood test that you mention that measures the average over 120 days or so you will probably hear called a Hba1c test or glycated heamoglobin test. It basically tests you red blood cells and shows the avaerage amount of glucose that has bonded with your red bllod cells. Since your red blood cells regenerate every couple of months it shows an average blood sugar figure over the last 80-120 days.

Don't know about metformin though...sorry...but good luck!

Hi Shirl

I can't remember how long it took to get the metformin in my system - sorry. But just adding a bit of advice about the metformin, take it with food, as it can cause stomach upsets. I have to take my bang in the middle of a meal and not even just before or an hour after or I have the runs.

Good luck

Annie

Thx Annie I'm taking my first one at teatime so will remember to have it while eating  .
When i eventually go on the 2x2 a day whats best time, breakfast and teatime???

I also take 2 metformin a day and I take one with breakfast and one with evening meal. :)
I get no stomach problems with it.

PS Welcome to the forum :)

Hi carnabychick and a belated welcome to the forum.

There is a subject, "Metformin, Q and A" on the Diabetes Medication and Drugs Board which may help with your queries.

Glad you feel better, sorry I can't help with the tablets as my son is now on the pump. Hope you get on ok. xxxx

Thx :D , i'm now on 4th day of tablets and tho first 2 days made my tummy bit yucky they not bin too bad since, now increasing from 1-2 then taper upto 4 :?
