Hold my Hands up, Admit I was Wrong about Low Carb....(Sort Of)

I've been eating and testing, eating and testing for a couple of weeks now. My BG is better than it's been for a long time. I will admit that eating fewer carbs has helped me reach these numbers, although I would say folks don't need to completely leave out the foods they love. Exercise has also played an important part.

I found that if I know I'm going to be at home sat on my ass all day, a low carb breakfast is in order, natural yogurt with nuts for example, to keep the numbers low.
I also found that if I know I have to go to the centre of the city, 1.5km walking, then I can have oats or wholemeal toast before I go and the numbers are still low, because of the walk.....

BUT, because I've been eating a lot more butter, cream etc than I normally would, I've put weight on.

In conclusion, I would say in my experience that low carbing is a good but not always necessary way of keeping blood sugars down. Not convinced that a lot of fat is healthy yet, I guess time will tell. I've only done the toast then walk thing a couple of times , this is by no means "research" :)

If you continue to eat carbs and increase you fats, you will put weight on because you will be increasing your overall calories. Butter and cream are very calorific. To lose weight on a LCHF diet you have to find the right balance between carbs, fats and protein or it won't work.

Thanks yeah, to be honest I'm only really interested in the BG numbers, have no need to lose weight really. I can see the balance would have to be right though yes.

You seem to be a little bit wiser now. Hopefully you can keep them down and control your bloods.
The balance is crucial, for someone like me who does need to lose more weight and has to control his bloods very carefully, then the full fat has to come into the total package as well as exercise.

Well done mate.

I had some butter on cheese yesterday for breakfast. No weight gain measured this morning....as usual.

Thanks. What I wanted to say in the post was that if people really miss their fav things, like bread, then going for a walk after eating it is fine, isn't it? Or not that simple.....?

Is that Prenton Park? Went there in the early 90's watching Blackburn, we drew 2-2

Pleased you've found a level that works for you Tooconfused, your are so right about exercise being an important part too.

Yes you guessed right. That's the Bebington kop. Was it built then?
We have played each other a few times since the early nineties, I think I've been to Ewood Park about 4-5 times.
Do you still go to watch them at home?
We have a thread about footie called 'Football season 2014/15'
Join in the banter.

Started going on Ewood in early 80`s, been living in Spain a long while now, but sometimes go when I'm home. Bebington Kop wasn't there when I went no...

My only comment would be to be careful of carbs+fat as that's a potential recipe for disaster. Whilst you may not need to lose weight, it's unlikely many of us need to gain it either. Unfortunately, when we gain weight it initially accumulates around the girth, which is a bit of a danger area.

Your profile doesn't help me understand if you're T1 or T2.

Thanks I'll bear it in mind. I'm T2. To give you an idea I've got myfitnesspal set at "87g carb, 87g protein and 116g fat". Is this bad? If it is I'm prepared to do a bit of gym too

It's neither good nor bad. You must set it at what suits you for the goals you wish to meet. As long as the calories shown are the right ones for you and your daily activities (not including specific exercise routines), and the carbs shown are the right ones for your blood sugars.

I have no way of knowing if it's good, bad or indifferent. Unfortunately, one of the trials of this condition is it is so personalised. For example, I have always been able to eat modest portions of rice, which other find to be just a no-no. You'll need to accept some trial and error in this. That you are on insulin may also have an impact.

You're in a truly suck it and see situation, where you need to keep your head screwed on and test and record the impacts of what you do.
