Just returned from the worst holiday in my life. Spent a week all inclusive in Djerba, Tunisia. This is without doubt the dirtiest most disgusting place I have ever seen. Rubbish everywhere in fact the whole island looks like a landfill site.
First 3 days were fine. Had my first alcohol for 11 weeks. Are chicken and salad everyday and blood well under control 4.5 to 5.5 and was pleased, managed to go to gym every day even in 106 degree heat.
Then struck with a stomach bug. Uncontrollable diarrhoea had to go to docs and get meds, antibiotics, oral rehydration, immodium and anti septic pills. Told to eat nothing but white rice and white bread for two days. Tried, could not hold it down! Ate nothing for 4 days other than one table spoon of rice. Not wanting to trust the restaurant tried to eat brought in product. For my sins, ate Pringles, full tube after the four days. Tested bloods at 2 hours 6.6. Final day no rice so ate cake as figured it must be brought in sponge encrusted with sugar and pistachios, and three pieces of chocolate cake. Tested at 2 hours expecting high teens 7.5 and next morning down to 6.
Not sure if the illness was due to the food or the fact that camels and horses where allowed to poo on the beach and it was left to wash into the sea where people were bathing? Truly disgusting.
The one and only plus is I have lost another 5 kg in a week. First time ever I have been on holiday and lost weight!!!

How awful for you and such a shame as we do look forward to our holidays, hope you get compensated in some way.

Dreadful experience, and what a shame because we all need good relaxing holidays. I hope you took some photos and make a formal complaint to the tour company.

Hope you get compensated for such a disastrous holiday. well done for losing 5 kg.:yuck: :):)

What an awful time you have had, hope it hasn't put you off going abroad. we have been to Tunisia, we thought the food was strange, we didn't get tummy upsets though. Hope you are now feeling better .;):D

Tunisian belly doesn't sound too good at all
everyone knows you don't drink the water. but I bet you had ice in your drink or ate the salad, which is also washed in tap water.

a Nepalese co-worker was going home for a month, and I said to be careful of the water and I went through the list of do's and dont's so she doesn't get Nepalese belly, because she had Aussie belly now. anyway to cut a long story short... a few days in hospital and a week in bed

We've had many holidays in Egypt along the Nile and found it was easy to avoid the water, ice and salads etc but not at all easy to avoid the paper money - and that is what was causing tummy problems amongst the tourists. Fortunately we had been warned about it, so we carried antiseptic wipes everywhere and made sure we wiped our hands after handling the money. No tummy upsets, no Pharaoh's Revenge at all.

Shame, as Tunisia has a 100% safe water in urban areas, and nearly 90% in urban areas.
I'd go for the camels and e coli on the beach.

Good weight loss though. :)
