Holiday with new pump - Airport advice

Hello everyone,

I've had my pump about 8 months now and in July I'm going abroad - my first holiday abroad with my new pump.

So would appreciate any advice / tips / experiences shared regarding pumps and airport security etc etc.

When I used injections I always put needles/pens/GP letter etc etc in a clearly labelled see through plastic carry case and I never had any trouble at airport security but wanted to know what people do with their pump - do you have to take it off when you go through the metal detector? Etc etc

I'm going to Spain this time and then the USA later in the year - does it differ from country to country, are certain country's more understanding/more pump knowledgeable etc etc?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Take a letter from clinic/GP saying pump must not go through X-Rays and must not be detached from you.

Metal detectors are OK but not X-Rays or new body scanners. At least that's the case for my Medtronic pump.

Spain should be fine but USA might try to force you through the body scanners. Just refuse, showing letter, and they'll probably use either hands or hand-held metal detector.
 
Not been abroad since changing to a pump but your pump manual will say its safe to go through x-ray, the manual I have for my Omnipod Pump says it's fine.

Read 102 of your manual regarding pump and airport security. There is also information at the beginning of the manual regarding scanner use etc. :)
 
Hi, we don't put my daughters pump or her spare holiday pump through X-ray or scanners. The security people are very good and take her to one side. Last year the security man had his pump on so they compared notes! We always bring a letter. Don't forget you can ask your pump company for a loan of an extra one to take with you. You just apply in advance. They send it to you and you just return it when you get back. Great for peace of mind . We also wrote down all her settings before we left and took them with us just in case something happened and we wouldn't remember all the different basal rates and ratios.
Have fun. Be careful with insurance as some companies don't cover Spain it is excluded from the European coverage for diabetes.
