Honey....is it ok?

I am type 1 and find honey is just like sugar. I see recipes that state they are sugar free and they use honey, don't be fooled it's just not true.

My best friend still tells me to have honey because it is all natural sugar and can't possibly do me any harm. People just don't understand.

I think honey is one of the better sweeteners. I use it in tea and sometimes on toast. Make sure it is pure honey and doesn’t have glucose added.
I tailor my insulin accordingly.
I am Type 2 insulin dependent.

I think it's time to invest in a testing kit.The downer is the strips seem so expensive!
You will proberbly get your strips on prescription if you're in UK. Also diabetics get their prescriptions free.

Sadly, Type 2's not on insulin or strong drugs that can cause hypos do not get prescriptions for meters and strips under normal circumstances. We have to self fund.

I'm type 2 while I have to buy a meter I get my strips on prescription and just got my doctor to sign a form to say I'm diabetic to get free prescriptions. Check with your surgeries.

It is individual even in T2. Measure and/or don't chance it. That breakfast is delicious already.

You are very lucky. I think most of us have been down the road of checking with surgeries about strips on prescription and are told we shouldn't be testing!

Yes, if you are on any sort of diabetes medication you get free prescriptions for anything, not just diabetes meds. If not on diabetes meds, then you don't get free prescriptions - unless in one of the exemption categories of course.

You can check with my doctor if you like. She’ll probably confiscate your meter, never mind give you some strips to put in it

Just to add you do need to get your dr to sign the exemption form not just tick the exempt box on the back.

I'm just saying what I had to do. Maybe different doctors have different ways. Also my doctors insist on testing at least once a day better twice. Again possibly different docs ways. Maybe because our surgery has specialty nursing etc for diabetics. If there is any problems controlling blood sugars we see the nurse to get us back on track. Maybe I'm just lucky having a practice that has a team who specialise in diabetes.

My response was about how to get free prescriptions legally in the uk rather than about your surgery. It seems you are quite fortunate.

Yes, maybe you are lucky, but the advice to test once or twice a day is not very good. What is the point of that? What do you learn from it? Fine once you are in remission, or very well controlled and know for sure that your diet is suitable, but not fine for beginners who need to test several times a day before and after each meal. The vast majority of us see a nurse. I have never seen a GP for my diabetes.. GP's normally devolve T2 diabetes care to their nurses. It is normal practice.

My apologies. I am derailing this thread about honey.

would you mind filling in your information on the profile page? if we know what medications you are on for your diabetes, or that you are not on any medications for it, this helps people when they reply to any questions or posts you make, as some advice is suitable for some type 2's but not others, depending on their meds.

Back on topic- I have just had a conversation with someone on this. She would not be willing to even consider or research that fructose is not a safe and healthy sugar, and so it honey. Apparently it has super powers to detoxify and also to help control blood sugar swings in type 2 diabetics of all sorts.

I can understand her skepticism, but to not even be willing to do a bit of research? heartbreaking.

As the article @bulkbiker linked to says, so many people think some 'natural' sugar like honey are not just ok, but actively healthy and good to have. So sad.

I have just this minute reminded myself that I partake in a shot of Honey Rum on Sunday evenings. Must admit I do go to bed a tad higher than normal when I do!
