Hi I was just wondering if anyone has had the same experience as me. I was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and at first panicked a bit. I was told that I was in this honeymoon period and my insulin needs would fluctuate for an unknown amount of time before I would lose all insulin in my body. So at first this was the case and i had to change my insulin needs almost daily. However after about a month of using insulin i noticed i was hypoing nearly every time i injected it. So i decided to stop using my short acting and noticed my sugars were perfect. I then decided to stop using long acting as well and noticed the same thing. My sugars were always in range. I have been completely insulin free for over 3 weeks now and have not once been high. Sometimes a bit low but think it was due to a lack of food/ too much exercise. If anyone has had the same experience I would love to know.

I do know someone who has been insulin free for j think 18 months. He's Type 1.5 and maintains it through exercise and s low carb diet, much like many T2s. Unfortunately, his is aware that one day it could all change for him

Quite common actually Pete. Once you start using insulin, it gives your pancreas a "break". This can lead to your own body releasing it's own insulin again, negating the injections. As hale710 mentioned though, this is temporary and no way of knowing how long it will last. Keep testing BG levels and enjoy your honeymoon because, like the real thing, it will eventually end.

I was the same for nearly a month. Diagnosed July 2013 when I was 20 and about April-May time 2014 I managed to get away with just my background insulin which even now is only 2 units in the morning. DSN said it was because of my active lifestyle, a lot of exercising etc but gradually it increased to needing my short acting again. It was quite nice only having to inject once a day! :) now waiting to receive my pump

I'm still in my honeymoon period, and I haven't take any insuline (both Lantus and Apidra) for over than 4 months. I train a lot, and I don't need to have any low carb diet, actually I eat about 70-90 grams of carbs per meal (and having 4 meals per day).
Every day without injecting is bonus, so enjoy it !
