I have recently had an HbA1c test and cholesterol test done as routine thanks to a sharp rise in Hypertension. Although my cholesterol has risen quite sharply my HbA1c has dropped from 42mmol to 39 mmol! Think that the dr will not be happy about the cholesterol rise which may well be due to the high fat and low carb diet that I follow. [Not too rigidly though]. I have no weight to lose.

Very well done on the HbA1c.

As far as your cholesterol is concerned, whilst the total may have risen, the really important factor are the components. My total cholesterol at my last test was 7.4, but the breakdown showed an excellent set of numbers. I don't and never have taken statins, and there was no suggestion - even with a total score of 7.4.

To be fair, I have done a lot of reading on lipids and worked with my GP to help her with some focused reading. I don't mean that in an insulting way to my GP, who appears to be a very committed Doctor, trying to do her best for all her patients, but she doesn't have the same amount of time as I do to research my issues.

Her comment of my latest results were: "You must be utterly delighted with those numbers."

Some time ago I started a thread on my journey with lipids, as my total numbers have always been high, and the underlying breakdown not too well understood by my GP, until this year.

Good luck with it all.

Well done on your HbA1c drop. Excellent news for you. :)

Did you get the breakdown of your cholesterol and lipids?

Oh, well done!

Definitely find out your cholesterol breakdown before you decide if those numbers are too high.

Am delighted for you!

Thanks everyone. It certainly was a relief as a previous dr had said the numbers would definitely rise and I'd be on metformin soon. Diet apart, maybe the walking I have to do with the dog every day has helped get those numbers down. I now have to keep them down.

Bluetit: the lipid/cholesterol breakdown was : total cholesterol 6.6; HDL 2.8*; ratio 2.4; Se no HDL 3.8. Previously the total was 5.4 and the ratio was 2.4. So when I have my follow up appt in 3 weeks with the GP [for rising hypertension] I am expecting some pressure to go on a statin. She knows I don't want one but NICE seem to pressurise the GPs to put everyone onto them if their QRisk is over 10%. Mine is 16% but then I'm 73 and age plays a large part in it I think. However statins won't lower BP will they?

No but they may make your BS rise - I went from an hba1c of 48 to 54 when I started taking them. Since coming off them my hba1c has gradually reduced to 36

Congrats on lowering your sugars. Definetelly look up krill oil. It has allot of potential when it comes to lowering cholesterol levels. People have been able to use that instead of statins.
