Hospital Appointment (part 2)

Thamks to everyone who replied. I went to my GP this morning and showed him the letter from the hospital saying that my levels had to be between 6 and 12 mmol/L. They said that if it was over 12 they may not carry out the colonoscopy. He suddenly changed his mind and literally threw a meter at me. It was then straight into the practice nurse to be shown how to use it. She duely showed me how to use it properly and even took a sample to test the meter. It came out at 21.4, (It was 15 when I was initially diagnosed about 8 weeks ago), she said it was probably a bit up because of my breakfast. When I told her I hadn't eaten anything since the night before, (my tea at approximately 6 ish), becase I had once again had the runs and a stomping headache since I got up she seemed quite surprised. I was ushered straight back into my GP who told me not to worry it was probably due to me being ill this morning that my levels were so high and I was STRESSED, (If I hear him say that word one more time i'll scream) . He also said that i only need check my levels about 3 times a week and only ever before and not after a meal because it's bound to rise because of my meals. Also I could check them if I felt unwell. OK so i'll be checking my levels every 10 minutes because at present I always feel ill. Any way i'll stop moaning now (off for about my 20th wee of the day), thanks for listening to me whinge again and best wishes to you all.

BUT AT LEAST I'VE GOT THE METER !!!!!!!!

Apparently, 50% of doctors qualify in the bottom half of their classes, and it looks like you're stuck with one of them. It beats me how we're supposed to keep control of the blood sugars without testing after we've eaten - precisely when they're most likely to come off the rails.

Why not tell him NOT testing is making you terribly stressed and see if he throws some strips at you too!

All the best,

fergus

sorry Fergus, my fault, he did give me a prescription for the test strips and the lancets. He said he wasn't worried about it being 21.4 but he has brought my 3 monthly blood checks forward by 4 weeks, he wants me in 10 am sharp Monday morning, (I think he might be slightly worried myself). A couple of questions for you experts out there.

1. Can it be the case that sometimes Metformin doesn't work on some people ?
2. how often would a normal diabetic use the test meter and strips ?

All help gratefully received.

Take care and best wishes to you all.

This doctor seriously needs to go on a diabetes course!!If you can get that hospital consultant on side it would be good.Better still change your doctor!! The fact that he's brought your check up forward means he's worried about your levels, they are too high! He will probably either ajust your dose of Metformin or put you on something else as well. Now you've got your strips,Test before and 2 hours after meals to see the effects the food you are eating has.Keep a food diary for a week so that you can spot any patterns. One thing,if you are going to test often you may have to buy test strips as your doc, having told you only to test three times a week, may not be willing to represcribe too soon!

I suggest 5 tests a day

on rising
2 hours after b'fast
either (alternating different days)
before lunch or before evening meal
& 2 hours after whichever
at bed time

The before readings should be 4-7
after below 10

If they are above, you have good reason to get further prescriptions.

You are feeling unwell & that may be diabetes related.

Your log book will inform YOU & the hospital (& us), even if your Dr is not impressed.

Hi Hazet...not sure that there is such a thing as a "normal" diabetic  !
I am type 1, so no expert, but some people do need more than metaformin to control their diabetes. At least with the results that you give the Drs...and your "sooner" HbA1C measurment, they can decide this sooner rather than later.
The onlything I can add, is that is you are feeling bad...thirst, tired etc, and running to the loo every 5 minutes, then you do need to sort this out. Life is to be enjoyed...and however nice your bathroom may be, it is difficult to do this from the smallest room. If you continue to get high readings...and I would say in double figures, then make another appointment and try and get it sorted.
Fantastic news about the meter though...at least you can now find out if there are any food gremlins that send your blood sugar soring.
Take care,
J

Hi, sorry sugar2 i didn't mean to offend anyone by saying "normal", the wrong wording i appreciate. However, thanks for all the info. What i've decided is that i'll go for the 5 a day testing that seems reasonable and not excessive. Also if he doesn't treat me the way i think he should from now on i'm going to change GP's.. I realise how much damage it can do over the long term if i don't get my levels down and quickly. I feel that my emotions are starting to improve slightly and i'm more up for a fight, (as long as I can knock him out in the first 2 rounds). Also i'll keep a diary of my foods that I eat and look for any sharp rises.

I really don't know what i'd have done without you people who have given me advise. I would have just taken everything that my GP said as being gospel and would have probably got worse.

MANY THANKS AGAIN TO YOU ALL. BEST WISHES !!!!!!!!!!!
