I am on a waiting list for a hip replacement. I'm wondering can anyone tell me their experiences of being diabetic staying in hospital. Do you do your own insulin and testing or do the hospital take over and do it all?

Whilst you are unable to look after yourself the hospital staff will do your insulin. Write down what you use and when. So everyone is clear on this.
Do keep your insulin with you though plus hypo treatments and plenty of test strips. Once you are able to self medicate tell them you self medicate. This is your right to do so. Hope all goes well with your op.

i was in hospital last may for an amputation, i had to supply my own insulin and tablets. My advice to you is take your own blood testing kit with you because nurses are so busy they may forget you are a diabetic.

on the whole i was treated very well and i am sure you will too and the op will fo very well.

Thanks so far for your experiences. Do you know what happens during the night time, do they wake you to test blood or anything like that?

After a GA yes but once you are able to self care and you have told them you are then it's up to you. Sleep in hospital??? Wrong thing to say but dream on lol.

Well yeh I know you don't sleep. I have only ever been in hospital once before with DKA so they did all diabetic care as I was far too ill to do it myself. They used to test me during the night which I found a right pain. I just wondered how things work as I'm not ill.

I had an op last week and took care of myself to a certain degree. I had my own meds but they tested every few hours. I also had a pharmasist come round to see what meds i was on and when i took them. I think they prefer you to bring your own coz of the costs to them. Before i went into surgery i was put on a sliding scale and stayed on it for about an hour after.

Yes they do wake you to do your blood and give you any medication you may need.

at the end of my stay my fingers were lilke a sponge i had so many holes in them, my blood was tested at least 6 times a day but i was pleased they were keeping an eye on me

I think hospitals and staff vary because i was never woken for tests. The only time i have was when i went in with high sugars and ketones and that is to be expected.
