Hi all just curious how you all. monitor type 2 self managed running at 6.1 down from 6.8 on last blood test. But no mention from gp about monitoring just living from each blood test every 6 months and praying it is ok as have no clue as to what is going on inbetween.dont get me wrong very happy with 6.1 but would like to monitor to keep myself on the ball so to speak

My diabetes nurse suggested I didn't need to monitor myself. This is based on nothing more than the health service not wanting to pay out for the strips.

Almost all on here have bought their own kit, with the Codefree meter being extremely popular because the strips for it are the cheapest to buy.

As for the pricker, I like the Fastclix as it was also recommended by most here. I don't feel the needle at all and I'm a wimp!

Test yourself just before you take your first bite and then again 2 hours after. This will tell you if what you have just eaten is causing spikes to your blood glucose levels or not.

We all have different tolerances for different foods so who knows, you might get lucky and find that you're allowed to eat as many fruit cocktail boilies as you want :D

Best of luck.

Yes, I agree with the others.

Ignore what your doctor/nurse says. They are wrong. Buy yourself a meter and start testing yourself. I use the Codefree because it has the cheapest strips, and you need a lot of strips. Without a meter you are working blind in between HbA1c tests - you seem to have worked that out for yourself.

My doc said there was no need to test myself. I ignored him to keep myself on the straight and narrow. Now he loves hearing my numbers. Admittedly they are mainly FBG, but its a useful guide. (Also handy in determining if I am having a mild hypo, which I did yesterday). So I would say, yes, test. Anything that gives you control has got to be good.

Thank you for all your comments and links will certainly look into them as i feel six months between blood tests is to long

I am in Canada and I do not know what is allowed under your health system but why not every 3 months? That is what my doc does.

yep would be good as your blood cells are replaced every 3 months but sadly UK it every 6 months unless you on meds.Guess it a money thing :(

I live in Canada too and I can tell you that meters will be given to those who are diagnosed with diabetes, not otherwise. Prediabetics will be monitored closely but meters or medication will not be given to them until their blood sugar reaches diabetic level.
