How bad are these blood test values?

Hello, I was diagnosed with Type 2 last week, and I just went back to the clinic to get my results.
Fasting blood glucose level - 9.0mmol/L
120 minutes plasma glucose level - 14.7 mmol/L

I read that >=7, >=11.1 indicates Type 2 Diabetes, so I guess then there is no question, I am diabetic.
But how bad are these values?

So far I have only seen the diabetic nurse, and the next appointment is in three months, meantime I am just supposed to try to lose some weight.
I would appreciate any guidance on understanding these numbers, thanks.

Yes, definitely diabetic. I can't comment on the 120 minute glucose level as I have never had this test and know little about it. The fasting test is higher than desirable, but could have been a lot worse. At least you weren't in double figures, which many are!

Being sent away for 3 months to try and lose weight and lower levels with diet and exercise is fairly normal for the first 3 months. If at the end of the 3 months your levels haven't improved, your nurse will probably prescribe you with some Metformin. In the meantime, have a look at this thread. If you haven't yet bought a meter, I suggest you make that priority. It is the only way to learn which foods your pancreas can deal with, or can't deal with. There is no other way. If/when you get your meter, let us know and someone will help show you how best to use it to test out your foods.
 
Welcome! Your numbers are not great, but you can most probably improve them significantly in the next 3 months through a change in diet. Carbohydrates (rice, grains, starchy veg, and of course sugar) are converted to glucose and raise your blood sugar level. So, cutting back on all these as much as possible will help control your blood glucose levels and you will lose weight as well.

As Bluetit1802 says, getting a personal blood glucose meter will be helpful to track your blood glucose levels and to assist in adjusting your diet.

Hi Moniki I was diagnosed as T2 in January and at 42 it was a shock, I have only seen a nurse and she told me to lose some weight (I am 5f2" and 11st 6 ) booked me on a course (in May) and told me to come back in 3 months. I bought a codefree meter as it was the cheapest meter I could find and started testing 7 times a day and started to keep a log of what I was eating and my blood glucose levels. I found that testing my BG 7 times a day was getting down so I only test 4or 5 times a day now.
I have stopped eating chocolate, cakes, biscuits, sweets, root veg, fizzy drinks and sugar in my coffee.
If I need a fizzy drink I have a small pepsi max. I have changed white bread to soya and linseed, and now eat brown rice, wholemeal pasta, and lots of salad (i hate salad) My next step is going to be smaller portion sizes. One thing I have found useful is taking to people about it and I have found out that a lot of people I know either have T2 of know someone who has. You are not alone, and this forum does really help.

How does the brown rice and wholemeal pasta affect your BG levels @Dilly40 ? Even small amounts spike me so I don't touch them, wholemeal or otherwise.
