How bad is bread?

I've not eaten any bread (well, maybe the odd scrap, but no more) since I was diagnosed (just over the pre-diabetic limit into T2) last year.

I've done pretty well on weightloss and general fitness improvement and have now been dropped to only 1x500mg Met per day, taken with whichever is the biggest meal of the day.

Weather was great this afternoon, so went out for a picnic - the majority of the meal was bread; I got carried away and had over half a (small, home-baked) granary loaf with a sprinkling of nuts and seeds in it - together with a few slices of beef, ham and some cheese. Oner *very* small glass of wine (just a taste, since I was driving) and an assortment of fresh fruit.

Weather turned suddenly cold and windy, so headed home a bit promptly, measured my BG 65 minutes after eating and found I was only 4.4!

Now I read that booze can cause a false low but I also thought bread was the horned-devil of foodstuffs for diabetics, and I only had a tiny amount of wine, so what gives?

Feeling somewhat confused, since I've been avoiding all types of bread for over a year now.

Mark.

Try testing 2 hours then 3 hours after see what you get.

OK, I'll try in another 30 minutes and see, which will be two hours.

I've not had any significant fat content today (the cheese was Leerdammer Light and the meat was very lean) so I can't see any reason why the peak would be delayed that much - I did have my Met with this meal.

I really did think that bread was evil incarnate.

We're all different Mark, you may be one of the lucky ones who can get away with it.I can't so i eat about two slices of bread a week, same with pasta ,I can't eat that or oat based products.

Hmm, maybe you are right - just tested at two hours and 5 mins and I get 4.6, which is pretty much inside the error limit of a home meter, I guess.

I really can't imagine it spiking later than this, so I'll probably save the cost of another strip* - and another hole in my finger!

I'm not sure how much Metformin lops off the top of a carbohydrate spike, I didn't think it was more than 1.0 - 1.5 or something?

Met doesn't delay and attenuate the glucose uptake, does it, which is the way that Acarbose works (the other stuff my doc initially mentioned, but decided that Met was best).

This has now got me wondering; what is the worst diabetic food of all time - a couple of pints of Lucozade, presumably, since that is used for OGTT - how about Mars Bars?

*What is the cheapest place to get strips for a OneTouch Ultra? I saw someone mentioned an online source, but forgot where it was now.

I don't think a couple of pints of Lucozade would be ideal, no. Probably candy floss or honeycomb might be highest of all, I'm not sure but I don't think I'll be testing them to see. A shame...... I used to love Candy Floss as a child.

Hi Mark,

We are all different and seem to have different tolerances to different foods. Personally I can manage bread without a major impact on my BS, a few potatoes or one small jacket potato are ok. Similarly a small packet of crisps doesn't seem to do me much damage. But rice and pasta, even in very small quantities send my BS rocketing. That is why we try to emphasise that people test different things because they may be able to tolerate some better than others. Sounds like your metabolism may be similar to mine when it comes to bread.

Deep-fried Mars Bars with melted Mars Bar Sauce with glace cherries on top. In a sandwich. Washed down with a lucozade and Tia Maria...

im the same with bread i can handle two small slices without much rise in bs, but rice, pasta, potato etc nooooooooooooooo lol :D

Well, that's strange!

Fasting this morning was 5.3 - the highest reading in 4 months (5.5 in mid Dec)

I did absent-mindedly nibble a tiny scrap of red pepper that stuck to the back of my hand, 15 mins before the test, while I was making my packed lunch, but can't imagine that caused it.

Think I'll stay off the bread - or maybe just allow the very occasional slice on feast days and holidays.

EDIT: Forgot to say that I felt so stuffed last night, that I didn't want dinner and just had a modest amount of fresh fruit; grapes, melons, nectarines.

Isn't it strange how some can tolerate one thing, and not another?
Bread sends my numbers through the roof (sigh...I miss toast)....yet pasta really doesn't doesn't!
Go figure.
