Hi All

I was diagnosed 4 weeks ago as type 2, gone beyond diet, taking 2 x metformin morning and night and sitalgin in the morning as metformin not working on their own

They picked it up when my sugars were 20.7

I cant get my sugars down below 10.00, they are averaging 12-16

Im due for a major op July 31st and have been told if l cant get them down they may cancel the op lve been waiting a year for

Doctor mentioned me going on a insulin slider scale when lm in hospital

Help...l cant have this op cancelled

So frustrated and starting to get scared about food and eating

Ive lost a stone in weight which is a bonus thou!!

Any ideas or help please

Well done with the weight loss - That will help bringing your BG's down. Have you considered reducing your carb intake - I know most DN recommend low GI carbs with every meal, but many of us find that reduced carb diets help us maintain a lower level. If you DN hasn't provided you with a meter I would suggest you buy one yourself and test before and 2 hours after every meal to find out what your system can cope with, anything above a 2 point rise is dodgy ground and you either need a smaller portion or to cut that carb from your diet. If you look at the low carb forum there are lots of ideas for low carb eating.

Hey there.

First of all don't panic or get anxious. Anxiety will raise your bg quite a lot.

So okay you realise you have a problem, now we need to see what we can do about it.

NOTE I am not a doctor so please check out any advice with a health professional if you feel the need to.

Clearly you have a meter, you will probably need to buy a few more test strips.

Firstly cut out ALL carbs from your meals for a few days. So no rice, potatoes, grains, pasta, cereals, bread, root veg etc etc. Nothing sugary, including refined foods - such as in a packet or from fast food places.

Eat meat, fish, eggs, cheese and some leafy or above ground vegetables, Protein and fat - trust us you won't feel like you are starving and you won't die from having no carbs for a few days. :)

Now test your blood before the meal, then have your meal, then test one hour after your meal, then two hours later.

Report here what you ate and what your bloods were and let's see how you get on. Don't worry about posting too many posts as no one is bothered by that, we just want to help you.

If you find that it's not working after a couple of days then we can move on, but I suspect you will be astonished.

Try to avoid anything that could give you a raised sugar level - don't drink too much alcohol, watch the milk, just a little (contains fructose a sugar), drink lots of water.

What medications are you taking exactly, even the non diabetic ones? (I've just had a brush with a pain gel that raised my bg I think)

If you can, go for a one mile walk - you don't have to run. test before and an hour after your walk. Did it have any effect?

You need to learn about how your body is working and the meter is what gives you the feedback. Don't worry about the pain of testing, the sides of your fingers soon get used to it.

Please take care and keep in contact. You will control this dragon - honest.

Well you can't get better advice than that!

Hi. Good advice to reduce the carbs to get any excess weight down. If after having a normal weight you still have high blood sugar then ask the GP for the two tests for Late onset T1 (LADA). Quite a few so-called T2s are actually LADA; I'm one of them. The indicators are a lack of response to tablets event though normal weight and having lost weight around diagnosis time. Hopefully for your op the hospital can put you onto insulin, but do low-carb before as it's better to take control yourself

Hi and welcome Tarcy.

You've been given excellent advice already and there is nothing I can add. Good luck, and please come back with all your questions, and let us know how you are getting on.
