how can sugar level go up with no food?

hi
i checked my blood when i got up this morning and it was 10
then after 2 hours it was at 11.6
how can this be when i had nothing to eat?
i had a cup of tea with no sugar and semi skimmed milk

i am type 2 diabetes and have not looked after myself for 15 years i have had it
i now realise it never gets better and am now taking note
i cant change the past
i have last week started to inject lantus once a day
i am still on 2 x 500mg metformin sr and 2mg of ameryl in the morning & 2 x 500 mg metformin sr at t time
i take the lantus at 12pm every day
 
hi there,
there is the possibility your lantus dose is not right and aswell as that, often if we dont eat then our bodies think we are starving and tend to do a liver dump,

A proportion of the sugar in your blood is made in your own liver, by a process called gluconeogenesis. If your blood sugar drops low, your liver will raise it. It also does this early in the morning, to prepare you for the day ahead.

im at a bit of an all time low at the minute and needle phobic so injections were not very welcome :cry:
although i have to admit i have no one to blame but myself
i have gone through life thinking it wont happen to me and i would never die(well burying my head in the sand so i dont have to face it)
now i realise it is happening
im very scared
 
if we can help u anymore ,dont hesitate to ask, there is no need to feel down on your own, there are many on the forum who have been in your positition too :)

just knowing there are people out there realy helps :wink:

i just dont feel in control of my life anymore
and i feel like i cant eat nice food anymore
but
i also want to do what i can to have a good standard of life
 
yes it is really hard,
i too found it so hard but now i do have nice things it is just they are different nice things to before :D

Yeah, diabetes isn't much fun. I'm sure someone will say this sooner or later, and maybe you know it already, but have you tried reducing the amount of carbs in your diet - bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, cereal etc? That's what made the difference with me and brought my numbers down - I'm type 2, diagnosed 16 months ago. I got complications (neuropathy) pretty quickly, which were too unpleasant to ignore - low carbing seems really to have helped.

I agree with the previous posters and their comments. As for not being in control that's where this site will help you find the way to get back that control. To be in charge of your life, your destiny.

Nice food ? Depends what you mean ? I have to say that I eat the healthiest, most varied and pleasant diet I ever have in my life as a Diabetic. There are certain foods that are banned, yes. However, I use a low GI/GL diet and can eat much of the foods that you may think are banned to you, even the odd cake,biscuits, fruit and chocolates are not totally banned. Other foodstuffs are just moderated, it's what you make it with your own choices, your own likes and dislikes.

Diabetes is a condition that you can and will deal with. It's progressive if you don't control it. Take control and you will feel better, look better and be healthier. I have had it for 12 yrs and it hasn't altered my standard of living, my expectations from life. Pretty much everything I ever wanted to do has so far been achieved, I haven't found anything that I can't do.....yet ! It is all down to what YOU make it. It has also changed my life for the better in so many other ways, relationship, travel, outlook on life - all much improved and getting better all the time.

It seems to me that you have already done the hardest thing that faces us all.
You have come to terms with the fact we are stuck with it and that diabetes doesn't go away, so there's no need to beat yourself up over that any more.
I ignored my diabetes for a while so you are not alone in that.
The question is, what are we going to do about it?

If you record what you eat and what it does to your blood glucose we should be able to help you.
I know this is a bit of a pain but we have all got the same problem on here, so there is loads of knowledge and experience that we can share.
Changes to your diet can make big improvements to your control, and that is a great feeling.
Have a look at the "success stories" thread on the low carb forum and you will see what I mean.
The goal is to get to a place where you control your condition rather than it controlling you.


By the way, read through the recipes section. (Nice or what?)

that's good to read, Ken.
When I was newly diagnosed I was worried about the future (a year down the line I'm less so) so this is inspiring to hear.
Also, I'm living proof (as are you and many others on this forum) that some of the diabetic complications CAN get better if you keep the blood sugar levels down. Your overall health can actually improve.
