Hi
I am sitting now at a costa coffee which is a carb fest place and there is a middle aged guy who put 3-4 sachets of sugar in his cappuccino!
He is not fat at all, maybe some belly fst but it's hardly noticeable!
I see regularly such guys in uk, eg at work they are skinny middle aged and they have for lunch a very full plate of chips and tomato sauce beans! Easily 250g carbs!
how can these people be so skinny? They may have a tiny bit of abdominal fat ie they don't have six pack but apart from that they are very lean! And with minimum muscles as well.
I was like that up to some age but these are middle aged!
How don't they get fat or develop diabetes?
It's so strange.
Any idea?
Thanks!

I have a colleague who has 5/6 spoons of sugar in coffee ... blurgh

As I was told on being labelled - 'it' doesn't mean the end of everything - just in moderation and or occasionally - assuming they don't do this everyday - doesn't it meet that criteria???

There's a strong argument that weight gain only happens when/if we develop insulin resistance.

First came across the idea about 25 years ago, in a Montignac diet book, and have come across it many times since. It makes perfect sense to me because insulin is the hormone that tucks excess glucose away in the form of fat. So the more insulin you have, the more fat you deposit. And what causes insulin to be released (or injected if you are an insulin dependent diabetic)? Carbs.

And the more insulin you have floating around, the more likely you are to become insulin resistant (which is where your body needs more and more insulin to have the same effect).

Insulin resistance is the main driver in T2 diabetes, and it is necessary to allow the body to lay down fat.

So I would guess that Mr CoffeeshopSugarFest is someone whose body simply doesn't develop the insulin resistance that causes the weight gain.
- doesn't mean he is healthy though! That amount of sugar has other knock on effects that can be very harmful, such as raised cholesterol, rotten teeth, an unhealthy gut biome, candida overgrowths, etc. etc. He just hasn't put on weight, so at the moment, his metabolism is coping without developing excess weight.

Maybe some of them do have diabetes and either don't know yet, don't care or inject when you're not looking. I know MANY, actual most ( other than in this forum) diabetic people that just eat what they want, some take meds, never test and just hope for the best. Some have very high acceptable goals, some don't have a clue what a carb is, some would rather take meds and just eat. You never know....

That being said, as @Brunneria said, it certainly doesn't mean it's healthy. At some point, at least by middle age, we need to take control of our own health. Everyone knows sugar is not a health food, diabetic or not. My kids eat a very healthy diet, taught by example. Don't be a envious of those people ( though easy to do) be proud of yourself that you are taking control of your health. I get envious of all these sweetened tasty coffee but in the end I wouldn't order one anyway. Maybe take a sip of someone's. Before diabetes I always ordered regular cappachinos or lattes ( dairy intolerant now) but never the sweet ones.
