Hi,

I've just moved to North London from Edinburgh were i had the best diabetes care. I joined a doctors surgery here but he seems to think that he is going to look after my diabetes care himself - which i do not want (I don't trust general doctors with diabetes care - due to previous experience!!)

Does any one know how i can go about finding a good diabetes clinic (i have been diabetic for 30 years - no complications but currently bad control so really think i need to change insulin!) I have moved about a bit but i've always been referred by my GP.

Thanks

:D

i suspect that you do need a GP referal. is there another GP in the practice that you could see if they would refer you. You are free to choose which hospital you get referred to, but you need the GP to refer

I think Chocfish would be the one to know, unfortunately she is on holiday just now.I've never done it but I think you can insist on a referral ,if not then speak to the practice manager about it.

Hi Flossy76,

I moved down to London from Edinburgh 3 months ago! I had great care in Edinburgh and was really sorry to give it up - I was also first on the waiting list for a pump which I have also had to forget for the time being :( When I registered with a GP I told him I wanted referred to Guy's Hospital because i heard that they have a very good clinic under the guidance of Professor Pickup. My GP told me it wasn't likely I could attend Guy's as I live outwith the catchment area for that hopital (I'm in Camden), However, a small amont of gentle persuasion encourged him to get a referral for me and I have my 1st appointment in November.

My advice - don't take no for an answer! (I also managed to get 500 strips a time on repeat prescription which I believe is rare down here - I think they might be scared of my outspoken Scottishness!!)

Flossy,
Have you tried looking for a local diabetes clinic on the Internet?
Just Google "diabetic clinic" together with your location. You should get a few hits from that; if not there are a few medical web sites that list them. I can't think of the specific site, but it is a NHS info site.
Then ring or email them direct and ask if they need a referrral or if you can go direct, bypassing the GP.

I understand from Hana that diabetics can self refer to the podiatry department of your local hospital ... it could be a place to start if all else fails, they might then be able to slip you in under the radar :) xxx
