Hi, first posting, recently diagnosed T2 & seem to be going along okay with diet. The thing I cannot understand is how do I know without testing when my BS is up. Any info would be appreciated, many thanks.....

The only way to be sure is to test, you may be feeling tired or a bit rough, a quick test will tell you if its BS related.

Hi, afraid Talos is right the only way to know is to test but the trouble is Type 2s are told they don't need to test. You should be given an appointment with a Diabetis Nurse and hopefully she will give you a meter and testing strips etc but due to cuts policy has changed and they are stopping giving the strips.

I don't know what your money situation is but on this site you can apply for the Bayer Contour which will also include the strips and needles its easy to use. Or go to a chemist and buy a kit but to replace the strips can be expensive (is expensive) so ask how much the strips are before you buy. You can go on eBAY and see what they have as they sell them on there and are cheaper.

Browse through this forum and see what people say about the various different tester they use.

The best diet that most of us find works is a low carb one but there are some as you will see don't use this.

Everyone is different and what one can eat another can't so it is by only testing that you will find out what your body copes with and what it can't for example on here someone suggested to eat new potatoes I love new potatoes so had some with my salad and my BS went up so no new potatoes are not for me I tried the red type potatoes and these are okay for me but smaller portions. I have porridge for breakfast which I make with water and then add a small amount of milk to cool it but this doesn't suit all. Avoid white bread and look at the carbs for the brown bread some avoid it all together but you can have a small treat once in a while but any white bread and you will find your BS shoot up (well it does for me) so treats like that I don't have.

So sort yourself out with a testing meter do your own stravation test in the morning and test 2 hours after food. Gradually you will know what you can eat and wont need to test so often but you can all of a sudden have a reacton to the food you were able to eat for some reason so keep an eye on things and your BS should be under control, some people test before eating then test after eating (2hrs) but with the testing strips being expensive I just test after food.

Be careful of not going to long in between meals this can make you BS drop and as you get your BS under control you can at first feel ill as you have been having high BS and now suddenly your BS is dropping and this can make you feel giddy shakie and you do feel quite ill - seems funny that you feel ill because your BS is dropping but its only short lived. Don't panic it takes time to get adjusted but so long as you are gradually going down you do get there.

Good luck I know how confusing things are when you are newly diagnosed and it is hard, but gradually you get used to it and life doesn't seem so bad. Roam about this site and read other items and this will help you a lot seeing other people's comments.

All the best
Sue :)

When Bg levels are high (Hypergycaemia) then you may exhibit certain symptoms. These can be things such as having a dry mouth, tiredness, thirst, frequent urination, recurrent infections such as Thrush etc. Sometimes when levels are high you may feel fine in the same way that some people can feel fine at low (below 4.mmol/l - Hypoglycaemia) levels.

I have had high levels during a recent illness, 24 mmol/l, and felt quite good, not ill at all. . If it wasn't for the fact that I test often I would never have known. I wasn't exhibiting any of the symptoms.

As Talos says - the only sure way to know what is happening and what your levels are is to test. Something that has to be done if you wish to know exactly what is happening in your body. With more experience you will then find that your suspicions as to whether you are high or low will be more accurate. However - NEVER assume anything........test !

As others have said 18stone, there is no other way but to test.
