I have been told that only premeal and bedtime tests
are necessary
so how would a person know if they had a low
especially a hypo. unaware person?

A T2 on insulin can get hypos so they should be given advice to test as often as needed, and particularly before driving, if changing insulin regime, and if feeling unwell. I think the advice you were given is incorrect and dangerous. You may want to change nurse or doctor, to increase the chances of getting safer/better advice in future.

If you develop hypo unawareness you would need to see a doctor... I don't know what the protocol is where you live but it's a risky situation and I would want whatever treatment options might reduce risk. Sadly I'm not sure that is funded for T2s in the UK.
