How Do You Decide Where To Spend Carbs?

Hi

Through your today I have had 26g carbs to my knowledge. We made a chilli for tea this evening and for quickness bought some cauliflower rice.

It was a step too far for this girl at the moment so allowed myself 30g of cooked basmati which on looking up is 8g. Is this ok to do or should I still avoid altogether?

Hi @NikkieDuranie did you test before and after to see what effect the meal had? only way to know if you can tolerate certain foods is to try them and test.

We are all different and as your BG levels become more controlled some people find that they can eat more carbs.

My own personal experience is that I have to stick to the cauli rice, I find frying it and adding lots of spice or herbs make a difference :)

How many carbs you have, and how you use them is a very personal choice.

For example, I eat around 80g of carbs a day, and get good blood sugar levels BUT if I have rice or pasta they go through the roof, regardless of how little I have.

Others can eat rice or pasta, but potatoes spike them.

Its all down to trying things out as individuls and testing before and two hours after eating a meal, and seeing what works for you. Good luck : )

Doh! Of course...I tested before just need to wait 40 minutes and will do again. Thanks for the heads up about tampering with the caulin

Hi if you have an Iceland store near you might want to try their cauliflower rice, I usually keep some in for convenience, it is sold as 4 individual steam bags and is already slightly seasoned.

Possibly you should be trying to change your mindset and not looking for something that is "just like rice"?

I eat chilli on its' own or with vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage.

We have been trained to stretch the meat part of a meal with lots of carbohydrates because they are cheap and filling. Chilli and rice, pasta with a meat sauce. You don't need to eat rice at all.

I don’t think about Carbs at all, let alone waste precious time counting them.

I have better things to do with my time.

I know what I can’t eat, so I don’t.

Much less effort and much easier.

Thanks all, the advice I have received in the last 3 weeks since diagnosis on here is go low carb and keep track, and measure to see impact on BS.

Just as I think I’m sussing it feels the opposite is being said...frazzled brain :)

After two hours my BS went up 1.6 so well within limits and although my numbers are still high they are coming down.

The chilli I had tonight I could easily eat without and add something different so I’ll try that next time.

Not really we're saying the rice won't do you that much good so rather than eat it just don't have it.
If you want chilli then have chilli it doesn't really need an accompaniment it tastes great on its own. We have become habituated to having carbs with every meal (which probably got us to where we were) so its best if we say farewell to them and just eat the yummy stuff instead.
