How do you prevent blood glucose rise during/after exercise?

Hi all

I am pre diabetic. I’m currently doing Low Carb High Fat.

Today my meal was chicken curry made with Ghee, loads of greens, some butter on the side and water. After 3 hours my blood glucose was 5.4mmol.

At 6pm I hate small pieces of chicken breast cooked tikka style. Just a snack, felt peckish not hungry.

At 8pm I went out for a brisk walk followed by 15 mins of interval running. I’m doing the Couch to 5K program. This was from around 9pm - 11 (with quite a lot of walking)

I just checked my blood glucose and it’s at 6.2 I know you all might grill me by saying it’s normal or ok, but I would like to work towards a normal figure if 5.4, or should it be slightly higher after exercise and how will this affect my morning sugars as this increase isn’t due to food?

Charlie, when it comes to exercise, some people find it pushes their numbers up and some down. As a general rule of thumb, gentle exercise tends to bring the numbers down, whereas more intense exercise pushes them up for a while.

In most cases, the rise will be due to your body releasing glucose from its stores to help you exercise efficiently, so it's nothing to be concerned about.

I tend to look on our natural body energy stores as being a bit like a rechargable battery. When we exercise, or prolonged fast we run those stores down a bit, then when we eat we recharge them, and our bodies prioritise recharging them.

So, in effect, in my simple brain, where I find visualisation can help me understand things, vigorous exercise, or fasting helps us recycle those stores, by using them, then recharging. To an extent the difference betweem gentle and vigorous exercise is just the load demand put on those resources.

It's not generally something to be concerned about, and if you feel concerned, test for longer and see what your bloods do. Some folks comment that after exercise, in the evening, they notice their morning fasting blood glucose reading is a bit improved.

Interval training will likely trigger a measurable glucose response as it tends to be glycolytic (anaerobic).

The running/sprinting imo will cause the spike... fight flight mechanism at work there. Natural response, your bg is good imo after doing that.

Guys I’m so impressed I went to sleep with blood glucose of around 6.2. I fell asleep around 1.30am and woke up at 10, just checked my blood and it’s at 5.6!!!!!!

It is my understanding that glucose is still 'burned' for a good while after the cessation of vigorous excercise. This could (?) be because glycogen stores will be being replenished. It's all good.
