Well I go moderate carbs on stuff like bread and potatoes I still eat new potatoes and Burgen bread... I don't eat rice or pasta because I don't like them. My problem is I still really don't know how people work out the exact number of carbs that they eat in a day. We are told to test our blood before and 2 hours after meals to see what foods raises our BG to high but short of weighing every little bit of food you eat how do you work out the amount of carbs that you allow yourself. I have the Carbs and Cals book which gives you the amount of carbs in a given portion but how do you know what that portion size looks like on your plate without weighing it

? I'm not sure why you are asking this Annie. I weigh mine when I'm at home and guess when I'm away from home. You have previously said that you are fine with the amount of carbs you eat and you are only pre-diabetic anyway, so I'm not sure why you are worried about this. If your BG's are fine with what you do, then keep on doing it. It doesn't matter what the amount of carbs is if your BG's and weight are fine. The carbs and cal book gives a picture of what it looks like on your plate, so you should know the answer to this already??.

As Zand says, the book has pictures in it for a given amount of food. You can also use food labelling ? Most people's diet do not alter a great amount so if you regularly have a potato, you can make a pretty good guess. It's always going to be a bit of an estimate really. Hope this answers your question as I didn't fully understand what you wanted. You sort of posed a question then answered it yourself ? Sorry if I misunderstood.

When I'm keeping a very tight check on what I'm eating I do weigh everything and keep a food diary via the website My Fitness Pal. Other times, like at the moment, I just eat healthily, no bread, potatoes, rice or pasta, but not weighing. The downside of me not weighing is I know my portion sizes creep up and I don't lose weight, but I work on the basis of enthusiastically trying lose weight for a bit, then take some time off and maintain for a bit. I'm in this for the long haul though!
