Didn't realise they went so far back, do remember Tom Baker eating them in Dr Who.
They are great hypo treatments, always start with the black ones first followed by red & the orange ones, the yellow & green are last to be eaten.

ETA Or is it they're the right size or weight for the job?
The alternatives are Glucotabs which are often suggested for treating hypo's for insulin dependant diabetics, they have a chalky texture and crumble quite easily if one has been taken out of the tube and the rest rattle about...........hence why I prefer JB's.
