How jelly babies were born.

Sweet success. Unravelling the jelly baby's dark past.
The humble jelly baby has been giving fans a sugary thrill for generations, but the apparently innocuous treat harbours a somewhat dark and mysterious past. BBC News takes a look at its journey from a Lancashire sweet factory to mass-produced giant of the confectionery world.

That article made me smile as well. Just think of all those unclaimed babies us T1Ds have consumed... :shifty:
 
I find it intriguing that they're an essential part of type 1s "survival kit".

Didn't realise they went so far back, do remember Tom Baker eating them in Dr Who.

They are great hypo treatments, always start with the black ones first followed by red & the orange ones, the yellow & green are last to be eaten.

Yes I always go for that sequence RRB :)

I don't really have serious hypo's (never needed any help from anyone or been admitted to hospital because of one) and more often than enough it's just to treat mild hypo's, often if I'm in the low 4's I'll eat a JB just to get my levels back up a bit.

Yes, but the fascination comes from wondering why of all things sugary they're the general choice... though I suppose they are compact/portable.

They are easy to chew and work quickly, I use Dolly mixtures.

The alternatives are Glucotabs which are often suggested for treating hypo's for insulin dependant diabetics, they have a chalky texture and crumble quite easily if one has been taken out of the tube and the rest rattle about...........hence why I prefer JB's.

Opened Glucotabs go hard as a pebble, inedible in a hypo situation.

I chop off their heads.
But it is more a quick, humane (cough) death, than a violent murderous rampage.

And I like the green ones best.
Always give away the orange ones. :yuck:

Mind you, must be about 5 years since I had one...

Not had any recently but always used to bite the heads off first, a top sweet. Great info, thanks.
